In 2022, the Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies will celebrities its 50th anniversary. As part of this celebration, the second-year class is producing a podcast series where they connect with alumni that have gone through the School over the last 50 years. In Where RU You Now? listeners have the opportunity to hear from former students and current media practitioners about what life is like in the industry, where they find themselves at in this present time, and share some of their favorite anecdotes of being a student in the School.     In the first episode of Where RU Now? member of the 2022 second-year journalism class, Cassandra Scheepers introduces gives us a glimpse at what the School of Journalism and Media Studies have lined up for the 50th-anniversary celebration program, which they celebrate this year. Heads of the School and other staff members give us more insights on the importance of these celebrations, how the School evolved since its founding year in 1972, what the future holds, and what makes Rhodes JMS unique. We also hear from previous and current students about where they are now and what the School meant to them; and current students who reflect on what drew them to Rhodes JMS.

    The Then and Now

    In the second episode of Where RU Now? host, Nikita Baloyi, a member of the second-year podcasting class at Rhodes University, introduces us to three stories told by fellow class members Siya Hhlebani, Lance Myburgh and Mihle Mdashe and how they experienced Rhodes University as first years in 2021. This episode embodies the term ‘the then and now’ by having Robyn Perros and Gorata Chengeta, alumni of the school of journalism, comment on these features and relate it to themselves. The episode first draws attention to the three different yet interconnected features, followed by Perros who speaks on the sense of nostalgia that these features evoke and then Chengeta who makes reference to the challenges she faced as a Rhodes University student.

And lastly, someone who has already graduated from the school of Journalism and Media Studies. Past and present, we hear how the School of Journalism and Media Studies has prepared these individuals for the world post-university.

    In this episode of Where RU Now? we hear stories of current second-year students who always had one goal: to study journalism. Although some do not necessarily want to be journalists, studying journalism is one way to become artists in their own right! In this episode, how their roads led to Rhodes. Siphesihle Sibaya introduces Leandra Reddy who shares how they ended up in the School of Journalism and Media Studies. Initially not accepted to a Bachelor of Journalism, Amy Bessick remained goal-focused, and her dream was realized somewhere down the road. The School of Journalism and Media Studies allows students to specialize in various media production specialties. It is Valentine Ntusi’s hope to specialize in photography. She tells us how her sister inspired this desire.
