What can we learn from the Jewish tradition of giving and charity? Co-Hosts Jeff Lee and DJ Chuang takes a look at a list of eight levels of giving from Jewish tradition that exemplifies how generosity can be more vituous, noble, and altruistic. The list comes from this article, Eight Degrees of Giving, by Chaya Shuchat—Rabbi Moses be Maimon (1135-1204) formulated a list of eight levels of giving, correlating to the degree to which the giver is sensitive to the needs and feelings of the recipient. Often times, Christian and Bible teachings about the principles of money and giving and stick with the safer dimensions of the spiritual and theological. We don’t think Christian giving should prescribe formulas; real-life examples and stories would be much more helpful. Why We’re Talking about Money, Faith, and Generosity This marks the beginning of our conversation about generosity as an audio podcast. My friend Jefferson Lee will be joining me twice a month to talk about money and faith. We invite you to listen in as we explore the many topics related to generosity that are rarely talked about, and why it is so important that we do. In this first episode, we reminesce how we first met, revisit both our personal and professional experiences in giving and philanthropy, and anticipate the topics we’ll cover in the coming months. Towards Creating a Future Together DJ Chuang wrote this article for Asian American Christian Collaborative’s Reclaim Magazine, “One Thing We Lack: There’s a dearth of public, strategic giving from Asian Americans. We can lead the way.” In this reflection, the author explores a vision for what the future could look when we become more generous with our time, talents, and treasures, while acknowledging some of the cultural challenges in our context.
