How Porn Influences How You Treat Your Wife

I’ve discussed in many places that porn use is not helpful for marriage, particularly in cases where there is a libido disparity and partners are trying to come closer to one another’s levels.  In this post I will address a phenomenon that many women describe in therapy, which is how differently their husbands act when they are using porn, why this happens, and how it hurts relationships! Which Guys Hate The Idea Of Responsive Desire?

Most men find it very useful to learn about responsive desire, which means needing to be touched in order to get excited. This is the kind of desire women generally have within monogamy after the honeymoon stage, and contrasts with spontaneous arousal, or being excited even before touching happens. When these men understand that responsive desire kicks in after the honeymoon stage (with some exceptions, e.g. ovulation), or with age, they start learning more about female arousal, resolve to engage in more foreplay, learn about sexual technique, or get better at massage. But there are other men who find it very upsetting to learn about responsive desire. They say that they don't even want to have sex if their partner doesn't experience spontaneous arousal, because then "she isn't really into it," or "she isn't attracted to me." This episode is for the men who find the idea of responsive desire anxiety-provoking or distressing instead of instructive. Buy my newest book! Remember, Your Life Would Go On Even If A Bad Thing Happened

Many very anxious people are consumed with fear of their own potential devastation or inability to cope if a bad thing were to happen to them. Some examples include: What if my partner was unfaithful or left me? What if my partner died? What if my child got ill? What if I was no longer physically attractive? What if I die earlier than expected? And so on. This episode discusses who falls prey to obsessing about these negative outcomes, why, and how to reframe these fears, guided by a more objective lens. The post about this is here:https://www.drpsychmom.com/your-life-would-always-go-on-even-if-a-bad-thing-happened/ The one I referenced later is here: https://www.drpsychmom.com/grandparents-even-when-they-were-terrible-parents-dont-generally-mess-up-grandkids/ Buy my newest book!
