Aromatic Heritage & Synesthesia On the Nose

This episode features Caro Verbeek. Observant, soft-spoken, kind and full of historical anecdotes. Her sweet son makes an appearance 3
On loop: sound piece by Ibo Bakker called ‘Audeur’ based on the poem ‘Ritratto olfattivo di una donna’ by Marinetti (1932)
I met Caro at one of her talks at Concordia University, while she was visiting Montreal. This encounter was very meaningful for me as I had started exploring the role of olfaction in culture, society, and history and had discovered the Centre for Sensory Studies shortly before.
We talk about Futurism (1910-1940), our sharing of synesthetic experience together with Piet Devos, Caro's introduction into olfactory art history and the importance of tracing aromatic heritage. We further delve into synesthesia, cross-modal perception and ideasthesia while approaching & imagining scent differently by using other senses/modalities.
We also explore the use of scent in space IRL post-Covid, scented letters anyone?
Then more on Caro's projects including Odorbet (with Catherine Haley Epstein) and Odorama and I ask Caro what she imagines the Futurists would think about our use of scent and its role in our society today.
With her little one joining us, tapping about, we talk about the scent of breast milk and the strange taboo we have about consuming it, then we explore the divine scent of a baby’s head and how a baby can recognize its mother’s smell. We also touch upon Proustian memory and explore some of the scents that make Caro nostalgic.
Finally, Caro shares something you might not know about the world of olfaction!
Thank you, Caro, for all the work you have done and continue to do. Since recording this episode, she has completed her PhD and is now working on Odeuropa, a pan-European project on European olfactory heritage led by Inger Leemans. Please follow her work here.
