    'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed

From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, May 17th, and I'm Keith Ippolito.

    'Bittersweet': Historic Marietta Rectory Razed

Saint Joseph Catholic Church has embarked on a significant yet bittersweet demolition project that involved tearing down its historic rectory in Marietta. Nearly two centuries of history are being torn down as the rectory undergoes demolition due to severe safety concerns.

Monsignor John Walsh highlighted that mold, asbestos, and lead had made the rectory unsafe for its residents and visitors. The damage, which dates back to Christmas Day 2022, was caused by a burst pipe that led to extensive water damage, forcing priests to relocate.

Despite efforts from Cobb Landmarks to preserve the historical Sugar Hill House portion, the church decided to demolish the entire rectory. Built in 1852 and used as a field hospital during the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, the rectory holds deep historical significance.

Facing over $2 million in restoration costs, the church chose to build a new rectory for about $1.2 million instead. While the decision was difficult, Monsignor Walsh emphasized that safety was paramount.

STORY 1: Missing Cobb Teen Found Dead from Apparent Suicide

Cobb County Police Department reported the tragic discovery of 17-year-old Reed Springer's body, who had been reported missing earlier. Reed was found dead near his east Cobb home, believed to have died by suicide. Police do not suspect foul play. Reed had left his house around 12:34 p.m. on Tuesday and was reported missing later that evening. Stress over finals was cited as a potential factor. The Cobb County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.

STORY 2: Cobb School District Map Debated in Appeals Court

Lawyers presented arguments in federal appeals court over whether a lower court's ruling that the Cobb County School District's map was likely an unconstitutional racial gerrymander should be upheld. The original lawsuit, initiated in June 2022, challenged the 2022 school board map. The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals heard oral arguments on the district's appeal. While the map in question is no longer in effect due to a new map signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp, the legal battle continues. The appeals court also questioned the school district's standing in the case, with Judge Ed Carnes criticizing their handling of the lawsuit. A ruling from the appeals court is pending.

STORY 3: County OKs De-annexation of Cobb School District Property

The Cobb County School District, after selecting a site for its new $50 million event center, is seeking to annex a 10-acre portion of its property into Marietta. The proposed annexation, approved by the Cobb Board of Commissioners, aims to bring all district-owned property near the chosen location into the city. The event center, planned adjacent to the district's headquarters, will host various events and activities. Additionally, the commission approved an annexation request from Powder Springs to develop a single-family home community on county property. This move aligns with the district's and developers' plans for future projects in the area.

STORY 4: Marietta Schools Considering New Cell Phone Policy

Marietta's Board of Education is considering a plan to restrict cellphone and smartwatch usage for middle school students by providing locking pouches for their devices. Superintendent Grant Rivera proposed the initiative to curb distractions, bullying, and anxiety caused by technology and social media. The pouches, to be locked by staff during school hours, aim to improve student focus and mental health. Exceptions will be made for medical needs, and communication protocols will be established for emergencies. Stakeholder feedback is being sought before the policy is finalized. Board members expressed support for the initiative, recognizing the potential benefits for students' well-being and academic performance.

STORY 1: 6 More Arrested for Fight That Left 19-Year-Old Dead

Six additional men have been arrested in connection with a fatal fight in a Powder Springs subdivision that resulted in the death of 19-year-old Fabrice Robelin. The altercation occurred after a dispute, initiated by text messages, led to a physical confrontation at the Lost Lakes subdivision. Coledye Warnock, the brother of one of the arrested men, is accused of fatally shooting Robelin during the altercation. According to witness statements, the fight ensued between multiple individuals, leading to Robelin being shot. Warnock and others fled the scene, with Warnock later arrested and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and other offenses. The other six men face charges of fighting and disorderly conduct, with one also charged with obstructing law enforcement. Robelin was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigations are ongoing.

STORY 2: Former Facebook and Nike Diversity Manager Gets 5 Years for Fraud

Barbara Furlow-Smiles, a former diversity program manager at Facebook and Nike, has been sentenced to five years in federal prison for orchestrating a complex wire fraud scheme aimed at stealing over $5 million. Furlow-Smiles exploited her position at Facebook to manipulate invoices and payments, directing fraudulent proceeds to herself and associates. She continued the scheme at Nike after being fired from Facebook, using similar tactics to siphon funds. Furlow-Smiles recruited various individuals, including friends and family, to participate in the scheme. She used the stolen funds to finance a lavish lifestyle across multiple states. Furlow-Smiles was sentenced to prison and ordered to pay restitution to Facebook and Nike.

STORY 3: Candidates Sound Off on Wildman's Civil War Store

Wildman’s, a longstanding store in downtown Kennesaw known for controversial merchandise, has sparked debate among candidates in the upcoming city council election. The store, featuring Confederate and Nazi memorabilia, has divided opinions, with some calling for its removal and others emphasizing free speech rights. Councilwoman Madelyn Orochena campaigned on removing the store, while candidates Ben Day and Beatrice Shakal expressed moral opposition. However, some candidates prioritize other city issues, such as development and public safety. While acknowledging concerns about Wildman’s, candidates emphasize the importance of upholding First Amendment rights and engaging in constructive dialogue rather than bullying tactics. The controversy surrounding Wildman’s underscores broader discussions about community values and inclusivity in Kennesaw.

Drayton Leads Fundraising in Cobb Superior Court Clerk Race

In the closely watched race for Cobb Superior Court Clerk, an exciting fundraising battle unfolds as primary challenger Democrat Brunessa Drayton takes a significant lead in campaign donations over Democratic incumbent Connie Taylor. Drayton, a former aide to U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff, has amassed $31,605, nearly doubling Taylor's funds. Expressing gratitude, Drayton noted, "It is clear that the public has confidence in me to bring the needed change to the Clerk’s office." Her campaign attracted support from notable figures such as state Rep. Terry Cummings and Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton, with contributions streaming in from across the country.

Meanwhile, Taylor's campaign, buoyed by contributions from former Gov. Roy Barnes’ law firm and other local luminaries, has raised close to $17,000. The Democratic primary, set for Tuesday, May 21, promises to be a key contest, with candidates grappling over who can best serve Cobb's citizens in the vital role of Court Clerk.

Ossoff continuing to pressure postal service to fix mail delays

U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff is confronting the United States Postal Service over mail delivery delays focused around the newly opened Palmetto distribution center in Atlanta. After revealing in a Senate hearing that a mere 36% of mail was arriving on time, Ossoff has demanded an update from Postmaster General Louis DeJoy within one week. DeJoy cites a USPS restructuring plan aimed at financial self-sufficiency and competitive edge over private shippers as the root cause of these delays. This plan, however, has faced significant hiccups at the Palmetto and a Richmond, Va., center, stalling nationwide expansion efforts. Here is DeJoy on the mail delays:
