In questo episodio affronteremo gli ultimi mesi di attività della missione Coolant in Friuli al comando di Macpherson. A gennaio la situazione è critica, i partigiani sono pochi e i loro nemici numerosi a agguerriti. Tuttavia, questo non fermò la Resistenza che presto si riogranizzò in varie forme, fino alla ricostituzione delle bande nella primavera. La Liberazione, tuttavia, non sarà cosa facile, visto che il Friuli rappresenta una delle direttrici di ritirata dei tedeschi verso la Germania.



In this episode, we will recount the last months of the Coolant mission in Friuli, under the command of Major Macpherson. In January, the situation was critical: the partisans were few and their enemies many. However, this did not stop the Resistance that soon reorganized itself in various ways, until the return of the armed bands in the Spring. Liberation, however, was not an easy task, as Friuli was one of the withdrawal routes of the German troops towards Germany.

In questo episodio seguiremo l'avvicendamento alla guida della missione Coolant tra il maggiore Vincent e il maggiore Macpherson. Questi, reduce da una lunga prigionia in mano nemica, e poi una missione in Francia, fu designato in quanto ufficiale esperto e capace. Tuttavia, le sfide che dovette affrontare furono notevoli: non solo la presenza massiccia di forze nemiche, rinforozate anche da truppe cosacche e croate, ma anche le crescenti tensioni tra sloveni e italiani, che infine esplosero a metà inverno. 



In this episode, we will follow the arrival of Major Macpherson (who took over the Coolant mission from Vincent) in Italy. Macpherson had been held captive by the enemy for a long period and was fresh from a mission to France. For these reasons, he was chosen as a capable and expert officer to lead the mission. However, he had to face several challenges: not only the enemy, reinforced in this area by Cossack and Croatian troops but also the rising tensions between Italians and Slovene partisans, that finally exploded in mid-winter.

Questo secondo episodio dedicato alla missione Coolant chiude il capitolo che vide il maggiore Hedely Vincent a dirigerla. I partigiani, che controllavano un territorio piuttosto ampio a nord-est di Udine, furono attaccati con violenza dal nemico nel settembre 1944. La battaglia tra i due schieramenti infuriò per giorni, mentre la situazione diventava sempre più disperata e, contemporaneamente, diventava sempre più chiaro che l'avanzata alleata a sud era stata bloccata e non sarebbe arrivato aiuto per i partigiani.



This episode concludes the time when Major Vincent was head of the Coolant mission in Friuli. The partisans, at the end of the summer, controlled a rather vast territory northeast of Udine. However, they were soon attacked by the enemy in September 1944. The battle lasted two days and was especially brutal. Meanwhile, it became clear that no aid would come from the south, as the Allied offensive had been stalled by the Germans on the Gothic Line, and the partisans had to fend off for themselves during the winter. 

In questo episodio dedicato alla missione Coolant, destinata al Friuli, ripercorreremo i mesi dal luglio 1944 al settembre dello stesso anno. Il maggiore Hedley Vincent, inviato come capomissione nella zona, organizzò i partigiani locali, divisi tra brigate Garibaldi e Osoppo, per dar battaglia ai nazi-fascisti, mentre ancora tutti nutrivano la speranza che la guerra sarebbe finita di lì a pochi mesi. L'estate fu quindi un periodo molto intenso, in cui i partigiani liberarono una vasta zona sulle Alpi Giulie. 



In this episode, dedicated to the Coolant mission in Friuli, we will recount the months from July to September 1944. Major Hedley Vincent, head of the mission, organised the partisans, divided between the Osoppo and Garibaldi brigades, to fight the Nazi-Fascists without quarter. Everyone believed the war would end soon and the Summer was a period of great partisan activity. The bands even managed to free a vast zone on the Gilie Alps.

L’episodio di oggi è dedicato a introdurre il capomissione della Coolant, il maggiore Tommy Macpherson. La sua storia è infatti degna di un film, e le sue avventure prima del suo arrivo (o meglio, il suo ritorno) in Italia furono numerose. Macpherson iniziò a combattere in Siria, passò poi in Nord Africa e da lì, catturato dagli Italiani, fu sballottato tra Italia, Austria e Germania fino alla sua fuga che lo condusse in Svezia prima che potesse tornare nel Regno Unito. Infaticabile, si fece poi paracadutare in Francia. Dopo questa esperienza, infine, fu assegnato alla Coolant, destinata al Friuli nord-orientale. Macpherson scrisse anche una autobiografia degli eventi: Behind enemy lines.

This episode is an introduction for the chief of the Coolant mission, Major Tommy Macpherson. His story resembles a movie, and his adventures before his arrival in (or his return to) Italy were countelss. Macpherson began fighting in Syria, then North Africa where he was captured. He was then moved around in prison camps in Italy, Austria, and Germany. He managed to escape to Sweden and thus went back to the United Kingdom, where he was assigned a mission to France. After this, he finally took the helm of the Coolant mission and was sent to the North-East of Friuli.

La seconda missione del maggiore Barton in Italia lo portò nuovamente in Emilia-Romagna, dove la Resistenza locale in pianura viveva in condizioni durissime, sempre esposta alle rappresaglie del nemico. La Evaporate, quindi, fin da subito si trovò in fuga con i partigiani, condividendo con loro nascondigli improvvisati. Almeno, fino ai primi lanci, quando le bande, rifornite di armi e munizioni, poterono passare al contrattacco.



Major Barton' second mission to Italy brought him back to Emilia-Romagna, where the local Resistance in the plains lived a harsh life, exposed to the enemy's retaliation. The Evaporate, therefore, found itself on the run, haring with the partisans their makeshift hideouts. At least, until the first airdrops, that supplied the bands with arms and ammunitions allowing them to fight back.
