    54. Voicing Your Real Needs in Midlife to Break Free From Binge Eating {Women Over 40, Healthy Over 40, Women over 50, Menopause, Emotional eating, Binge eating, Stress eating, people pleasing, healthy tips}

    It’s time to overcome the “good girl” conditioning and stop binge eating.
    This episode digs deeper into how being the "good girl" or people-pleaser in childhood can lead to suppressing emotions and using food to cope as an adult. Kim shares her personal experiences and story and how being a people pleaser resulted in numbing out with food.
    Kim shares what people pleasing really is and how this conditioning of suppressing emotions can cause you to stuff those feelings down, but later escape the emotions by eating mindlessly.
    Kim explains how this "good girl" conditioning leads to struggles like not expressing true feelings/wants, feeling you always have to have the right answers, perfectionistic tendencies, difficulty asking for help, losing touch with your authentic self, and neglecting self-care.
    Stay tuned for tips and read below on ways to reach out to Kim for support.

    53. Running Into Midlife: The Health Benefits and How to Train as a Beginner or Experienced Runner {Women over 40, Midlife women, Menopause, Running, Learn to Run, Healthy Habits, Health for women over 40}

    53. Running Into Midlife: The Health Benefits and How to Train as a Beginner or Experienced Runner {Women over 40, Midlife women, Menopause, Running, Learn to Run, Healthy Habits, Health for women over 40}

    Have you ever wondered about running in your 40s, 50s or 60s?  Maybe you want to keep running and wonder about the benefits or you have always wanted to start running, but think it’s too late.  This episode will inspire you either way.  This is a selfish episode because I have loved running for a long time and it has physically and mentally gotten me through a lot in my life.
    Jared Broughton is a running coach who has been passionate about the sport since age 17.   He is visually impaired (legally blind) and a former carded para-athletics athlete. He has been running seriously for 17 years consistently non-stop.

    He helps aspiring & experienced runners fit training into their busy schedules & achieve their athletic performance & fitness goals. His personalized training plan & coaching helps you boost mental, physical, and longevity health without injury, pain, or “falling off the wagon” no matter what age you are.

    Jared shares his background and inspiring story and how running allowed him to find independence as a solo sport and build immense commitment, dedication, and discipline that transferred to other areas of his life.

    Jared encourages facing the fears around running by viewing it as exposure therapy to a therapeutic, natural movement that forces focus. If you’re a beginner, he shares practical and doable advice to get started like starting with just 1 mile every other day until it feels too easy, setting out gear beforehand, and trying run/walk intervals.

    For women specifically, Jared highlights running's benefits in developing high pain tolerance, regulating hormones through the runner's high "happy drug," and tapping into the endurance capabilities women were designed for to dominate ultra distances.

    Don’t worry.  I know you’ve heard me and the experts talking about lifting weights.  We don’t leave that out.  To become a well-rounded runner, Jared advises strength training 3 times per week and incorporating different types of runs.

    He leaves us with some amazing tips that will make you feel like hitting the road today. One of my favorite tips is to finish feeling you could've done more, adjust effort based on weather conditions, and be flexible.

    Jared has unique coaching plans for everyone so connect with him to find the runners high.

    52. Women over 40, stop blaming yourself: Identify the true drivers of your over eating habits {Emotional Eating, Healthy Habits, Stress Eating, Women over 40, Women over 50, Health tips for women over 40, menopause, hormones, weight loss}

    Are you an educated, motivated woman who blames yourself for constantly overeating, whether it's late at night, grabbing snacks at work, or indulging in sugary treats?

    In this episode. I explain that the reasons you think you overeat - like sugar addiction, lack of willpower, or an inability to stick to a diet - are often not the true, deeper reasons.

    The real reasons behind overeating are often more complex, involving stress, hormone imbalances, boredom, and other lifestyle factors. I dig into how factors like overwhelming stress, hormonal changes, and even procrastination can drive us to seek comfort in food.

    I share that beating yourself up over "failing" at diets or having no willpower is counterproductive - the solution lies in understanding the deeper reasons behind your behaviors.

    I outline one approach of thoroughly examining a client's entire daily routine to identify areas for improvement, whether it's lacking nourishing meals, not getting enough rest, or needing more social connection.

    By addressing the root causes, you can develop sustainable habits that steer you away from overeating and toward a healthier, more balanced relationship with food.

    Welcome to episode 49 of The Emotional Eats Podcast!

    In this episode, I am joined by Menopause Fitness Expert, Debra Atkinson.  Debra is the founder of Flipping 50, the first and only online fitness membership dedicated exclusively to women in menopause, in addition to creator of the Flipping50 Menopause Fitness Specialist™ course for fitness and health coaches.   Her TEDx talk is called  Everything Women in Menopause Learned About Exercise May Be a Lie.

    Debra shares her journey of discovering her passion for fitness and helping others feel alive through movement and strength training. She emphasizes the importance of building muscle, especially for women going through menopause, to counteract muscle and bone loss, improve insulin sensitivity, and boost overall health.

    Debra advises focusing on gaining muscle rather than just losing weight. She recommends aiming for a protein intake around your body weight in grams per day to support muscle growth. Incorporate strength training with progressive overload into your routine, and don't neglect daily movement like walking.

    To stay motivated, Debra emphasizes commitment over motivation - aligning your actions with your values and desired legacy. She leaves you with three key action steps for overall health in midlife and shares that small, sustainable changes can significantly impact your health and vitality.

    Highlights:
    Menopause, fitness, and emotional eating with a focus on midlife women. (0:24)
    Parenting and healthy eating habits. (5:00)
    Family background, food habits, and fitness journey. (10:10)
