Jack Roney spent 33 years as police officer, serving as a general duties officer, detective, police academy instructor, media advisor and strategic policy officer before retiring to focus full time on writing. His crime fiction is inspired by his real life experiences. Harry Colfer is a critical care paramedic who’s seen stuff that’ll turn your hair white. His murder mystery and action thriller novels are told through the unique perspective of a paramedic. He has released a series of short stories based on his frontline experiences. Together, Jack and Harry interview special guests including authors and writing / publishing industry experts to discuss all things fiction writing. Uploads every Monday morning.     Professor Kim Wilkins discusses academic research and genre fiction

    Born in London, Brisbane-based author Kim Wilkins is Professor of Writing at the University of Queensland. She has a long list of published adult fantasy, women’s historical adventure, and young adult novels, as well as children’s books. Kim has also published academic books about genre fiction, most notably a co-written book titled ‘GENRE WORLDS – Popular Fiction and Twenty-First-Century Book Culture’. Her forthcoming book with Helen Marshall and Lisa Bennett is called “Story Thinking and the Real-World Uses of Science Fiction and Fantasy”. In this episode, Kim describes the key elements of genre fiction and findings from her academic research.

    In this episode, Jack and Harry were joined by award winning authors Heidi Catherine and Anne Freeman. Anne and Heidi have teamed up with 10 other authors to put together a Christmas romcom anthology called 12 Tropes of Christmas: A collection of festive romcom stories. (Cover revealed in July — and the release date is 1 October.) The collaboration involves indie and traditionally published authors who write across many genres including Romance, Fantasy, Thriller and beyond. Heidi and Anne discuss various ways that working in collaboration with other authors to create an anthology of short stories can be mutually beneficial in terms of author cross-promotion and exposure.

    Sarah Todman's career as a writer spans more than 20 years. She has worked extensively as a journalist, communications manager and now as a strategic content specialist helping a range of clients to tell their brand stories. Her adventures in fiction writing took off in 2021 with the publication of her first children’s book, Bab’s Mermaid Adventure. This was followed by Bab’s Camping Adventure in 2022. Sarah’s first adult contemporary fiction novel, New Year’s Eve, which is described as a quirky outback romance, was released in May 2024. In episode 1 of 2 Sarah chats with Jack and Harry about how growing up in a country pub inspired her novel. She also discusses the transition from writing as a journalist and communications officer to writing fiction.

    Author Peter Schinkel talks sci-fi (part 1)

    Author Peter Schinkel has loved writing since primary school. Mainly short stories and poetry, and science fiction such as Doctor Who, Star Trek, and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.  His writing dream blossomed in mid-2022 when he hired an editor and dived into writing almost every day. Twisted Planet Book One, his first anthology of science fiction short stories came out in September 2023. Twisted Planet Book Two is due for release in November 2024.  Peter’s stories are less about aliens, war and dystopian futures, and more about exploring the human condition, looking at themes like love, fear, mortality, hope and fun.  In part 1 of 3, Peter discusses various techniques he uses for world building.
