778 - Do We Say 'Red Skies at Night, Sailor's Delight' Because of the Saharan Dust Plumes? Also, 'Yoiks!'

The Saharan dust plumes can make the sky red, but they aren't the source of the old saying "Red skies at night, sailor's delight. Red skies in the morning, sailor take warning." That comes from clouds! Also, we talk about which came first: "yikes" or "yoiks."

Ash in Melbourne ,

Helpful

Usually listen on my morning commute to work. The history of phrases and quick and dirty tips are fun ways for me to learn and well if we had this in school rather than those huge dry text books i may have paid more attention.

Love language

I listen to Grammar Girl anywhere - driving, cooking, running, washing clothes...Thank you so much for putting this really informative podcast together and doing you bit to promote accurate use of language. It is great to see English appreciated.

Interesting intermittently

The choice of topics varies in significance. Advertising is distracting a lot. Repeated episodes summarising style guides can be painful.
