    Episode 6: “Forever Our Showgirl”

    Episode 6: “Forever Our Showgirl”

In this touching final episode of Kylie: Behind the Seams, O & Joe delve into Kylie’s extravagant Pink Showgirl costume from her 2006 Homecoming tour. Following Kylie’s treatment for breast cancer, her return to stage in this regal costume was one of her most profound to date. Not only does this costume symbolise a pivotal moment in Kylie’s career, the Pink Showgirl costume is also Joe’s all-time favourite.

Designed by John Galliano, this costume is ‘a whole lotta look’, consisting of a beaded corset and knickers, ostrich feather bustle, bolero, a headdress and more.

Kylie’s triumphant return to stage in 2006 for her Homecoming tour can be seen here.

The Pink Showgirl costume is preserved and cared for in the Australian Performing Arts Collection at Arts Centre Melbourne. You can view the costume in the online catalogue here.

O & Joe want to thank everyone for listening, watching and especially for reaching out and sharing your own Kylie Minogue memories and stories. They’d especially like to thank the one and only Kylie Minogue. Without her legacy and life-changing experiences, O & Joe and the Kylie Krew wouldn’t be the same.

And from all of us at Arts Centre Melbourne, we would also like to thank Kylie for her generosity over many years, to the Australian Performing Arts Collection. We are proud to be custodians of your precious pieces, so they can be preserved and celebrated for years to come.

Episode 4: “We Still Love You”

In this very special episode, O & Joe are joined by Claudia Funder, Research Service Coordinator from the Collections team at Arts Centre Melbourne to discuss Kylie’s Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi Dress. Claudia shares her (nearly endless) knowledge on the Australian Performing Arts Collection, with a focus on this lesser-known costume.

This costume is featured in the music video for ‘I Still Love You (Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquoi)’ from Kylie’s debut album in 1988.

Episode 3: “She Did It Again”

Episode 3: “She Did It Again”

This episode, O & Joe are looking at the iconic Dance Kylie dress, one of the four costumes worn in the music video, ‘Did It Again’ from Kylie’s 1997 Impossible Princess album. Along with Cute Kylie, Sex Kylie, and Indie Kylie – Dance Kylie symbolises the many different media portrayals of the one-and-only Kylie Minogue at the time.

Why are O & Joe looking at the Dance Kylie dress? Aside from it being one of Kylie’s most recognisable costumes, it’s Owen’s all-time favourite.

Designed by William Baker, this mini lycra costume stands out amongst the other three Kylies with its asymmetric colourful stipes.

Episode 2: “Our Girl Next Door”

Episode 2: “Our Girl Next Door”

In this deep dive into Kylie Minogue’s extraordinary costumes, O and Joe are going right back to where it all began. They’re going back to 1986 in Ramsay St, where neighbours became good friends, to talk all about Charlene’s Overalls.

Kicking off her acting career as Charlene Robinson in the legendary Australian television show, Neighbours, Kylie Minogue and the character of Charlene quickly became a cultural phenomenon both in Australia and overseas. Charlene’s most recognisable costume was her King Gee, khaki overalls – complete with frayed patches and oil stains.

Charlene’s Overalls are preserved and cared for in the Australian Performing Arts Collection at Arts Centre Melbourne, and you see them in the online catalogue.
