My Life in Australia's Most Infamous Cult (Part 1)

Ben Shenton grew up in a religious sect in central Victoria called 'The Family'. The children were told that their leader, Anne Hamilton-Byrne, was a reincarnation of Jesus Christ and were made to dress alike and bleach their hair. This continued until Ben was 15, when police raided the compound. Ben tells us about his life before and after that raid.

MissFlynn1 ,

Very good - just needs to learn to really LISTEN but great show

I’ve only discovered this and listened to the Milat one tonight

The good: the production values are great although the breaks are a bit jarring but .. a necessary evil. The show is very tight and well thought out.

I learnt a lot that I didn’t know about the Milat case and I was not much older in 1989 than the backpackers, travelling the Hornsby pacific hwy nth road when Ivan worked there. So I have done some reading I can tell you.

I loved the guest. I had not heard him before..
He was clear, articulate, Knowledgeable and humble. As you said - front row seats. Wow.
BTW I loved the insights into Clive Small!

However (before I get to the last good thing) the podcaster/interviewer needs to stop, listen and drooooop it.The detective was riveting and professional. He was not traumatised, in need of counselling or waiting to bare his soul to you. He is a shining example of not letting life drag you down.

So the annoying questions which seemed to try and elicit an emotional Big Reveal were annoying. And unnecessary. The show stood on its merits.

Finally my last point. The same said podcaster/interviewer was easy on the ear. Great voice, very mellifluous, steady and engaging. That’s hard to find.

Keep up the good - I’ll be back for more.

Interesting & easy listen

Great stories to wind down to, relaxed conversations and concise explanations. Love regularly checking for new episodes as the subject matter is varied, add it to your follow list. Thanks Julian! George's story was incredible and profound, what an amazing man.

I really want to like this podcast

Very frustrating, I love the topics and guests, but the host really needs to study journalism and learn how to professionally interview people. There are so many lost opportunities where he could of added follow up questions, but instead he says, "OK, cool". And novice questions like,"Tell us about yourself".
