Lone Passage is a podcast about those most vulnerable and invisible in our society; Unaccompanied Minor Refugees. Children who are forced to leave their homes and loved ones due to dire circumstances. Through this exclusive audio documentary series, we will be shining a light on the stories and struggles of refugee children who in one way or another, ended up here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. What does the future hold for these young refugees in a country that doesn't recognize the rights of refugees? From Renegade Radio in collaboration with Malaysiakini, this is Lone Passage.

    Episode 3 - Into The Fire, Pt. 2

    In this two-part episode, we explore the living and livelihood options for refugees in Malaysia. In Part 2, we look at the complicated process of acquiring Refugee Status Determination and a UNHCR card, as well as the long, narrow road to resettlement. We examine what education opportunities are available for refugee children in Malaysia. We also look briefly at the grim situation in detention facilities, which is hard to report on due to lack of information and transparency. At the end of the episode, we ask the question: what do we have to gain by denying refugees a right to education and legal employment, and treating them as criminals?     Episode 3 - Into The Fire, Pt. 1

    In this two-part episode, we explore the living and livelihood options for refugees in Malaysia. In Part 1, we look at shelter and living options for Unaccompanied Minor Refugees, including community fostering and reunification. We examine refugee and migrant living spaces in Malaysia and go back in history to explore Malaysia's role in the Vietnamese Boat Refugee crisis. We also touch on the COVID-19 pandemic and Malaysia's Movement Control Order (MCO) and how these affected the migrant and refugee community.     In Part 2 of The Journey, we meet James and Sharifah, two refugees from Myanmar who arrived in Malaysia alone when they were minors. James is a Chin refugee who came to Malaysia when he was 15, and Sharifah is a Rohingya refugee who was brought to Malaysia by a smuggler when she was just 5 years old. Both came to Malaysia to escape persecution and violence in Myanmar, and to reunite with their long-lost families. The paths that brought them to Malaysia were unconventional and dangerous.
