I'm your host, Peter Tas, and today I am truly honored to be joined by a living legend in the martial arts world—Senior Grand Master Chuck Sullivan.   Mr. Sullivan's journey in Kenpo began in February 1959 when he became a direct student of the founder of American Kenpo, Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker. As the fourth person ever to be promoted to Black Belt by Mr. Parker, Mr. Sullivan has been a cornerstone in the development, preservation, and innovation of the art for over six decades.   Often referred to as the "Elder Statesman of Kenpo," Mr. Sullivan’s profound influence can be felt throughout the entire Kenpo community. His visionary approach led to the creation of the first-ever comprehensive distance learning program for Kenpo in the 1980s, making martial arts education accessible to students all over the world. This groundbreaking achievement was the foundation of what is now the International Karate Connection Association, or IKCA, which has seen over 625 Black Belts and countless other practitioners benefit from his teachings.   Mr. Sullivan is not only a pioneer but a true trailblazer, ensuring that Kenpo remains dynamic, practical, and inclusive for all practitioners. His passion for teaching and his lifelong dedication to the art have left an indelible mark on the martial arts landscape.   Given the richness of Mr. Sullivan’s journey and the countless insights he has to share, we’ve made this a special two-part episode. Mr. Idol began his Kenpo journey in 1986 under the guidance of Albert Cornejo, building the foundation for a lifelong dedication to the art. In 1987, he took a pivotal step by training at Senior Grandmaster Edmund K. Parker’s West LA studio. This opportunity placed Mr. Idol at the heart of Kenpo’s development and exposed him to the legacy of Kenpo’s founder. Over the years, Mr. Idol expanded his knowledge by training with legendary figures such as Larry Tatum and Frank Trejo. His transition to Bryan Hawkins as his primary instructor in 1992 marked a significant milestone, further refining his craft and understanding of the art. Outside the dojo, Mr. Idol’s skills have been put to use in extraordinary ways. In 1996, he served as a bodyguard for the Dalai Lama, demonstrating his discipline and ability to apply martial principles in high-stakes situations. In 2002, he collaborated with Tony Horton to develop the Kenpo DVD for the P90X fitness program, introducing the art to millions worldwide. Adding to his legacy, in 2009, Mr. Idol authored a verified history of American Kenpo, providing invaluable insights into its development, particularly in Europe.
