Early Missionary Thomas Kendall facilitated the sale of hundreds of muskets to Ngāpuhi Māori, helping to enable the bloodiest wars in New Zealand history. But there's more to Kendall's story. He was instrumental in the transformation of Te Reo Māori into a written language, and became so fascinated by Māori spirituality that he (in his own words) "almost completely turned from a Christian to a Heathen".

Recently discovered and now easily treasured as a firm favourite! Delightfully told with modern viewpoints - a real treasure trove of historical kiwi facts and people. Some of the content is tough to hear at times (such as scientific racism) but it’s done with honesty and dignity, that have me wanting to learn more and more. Well done RNZ!

Great to listen too- it is a must for Aotearoa-NZ schools to listen especially for History Content- thanks for these episodes. Really taps into ‘historical perspectives’

I assumed that all Kiwis were perfectly wonderful moral and responsible people. Clearly not! Oh well, at least the brigands that host this podcast are good enough story tellers to make up for the moral turpitude that this podcast exposes.
