As a perpetual student, Chris Sandel is also trained in Intuitive Eating (IE), Health At Every Size (HAES) ®, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), polyvagal theory, Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), trauma, behavioural psychology, and habit formation. Originally from Sydney, Chris lives in the UK with his wife Ali and 6-year-old son Ramsay.

    Main Discussion Points:

    - Why restriction is present in all eating disorders and the common threads between them (00:13:17)

    - Building resilience - physical, psychological, emotional, connection - to enable full recovery (00:41:09)

    - Taking meaningful action versus small incremental changes in recovery (00:25:44)

    - Creating distance from unhelpful thoughts through diffusion techniques (00:48:20)

    - Connecting to your vision and values to move through fear of weight gain (00:55:52)

    Key Quotes:

"I am a full advocate that people can reach a place of full recovery and that full recovery is for everybody, and it's not a maybe or possible. It's like a yeah." (00:09:31)

"The only way to build resilience is to take action. And so really, if if I'm looking at this in terms of a visual, the the thing that connects all of those things is action taking." (00:45:58)

"It doesn't matter whether something is true or not. Because you can be thinking a thought that is true, that is really, really unhelpful for you to to continue thinking of." (00:49:50)

Will I be overweight after recovery? & Should I follow all of my sweet cravings?

Will I be overweight after recovery? & Should I follow all of my sweet cravings?

In this podcast episode, Victoria discusses two questions she received related to the fear of weight gain in eating disorder recovery and the inability to stop craving sweet foods. She addresses several key aspects, including genetic predispositions to weight struggles, the difference between extreme hunger and bingeing behaviours, allowing yourself to truly honour cravings, and the importance of healing your relationship with your body and self during recovery.

    Main Discussion Points:

    - Factors early in life, like trauma and a mother's prenatal nutrition, that can influence weight and eating behaviors later on (timestamps: 00:05:26, 00:06:53)

    - The difference between extreme hunger and bingeing in eating disorder recovery (timestamp: 00:11:51)

    - Why we crave sweet foods when our bodies are malnourished or underfed (timestamp: 00:34:49)

    - The concept of an "imaginary line" of calories that eating disorder thoughts latch onto, and why this restrictiveness prevents healing (timestamp: 00:29:45)

    - Making peace with the unknown of where your body's set point weight will settle after recovery (timestamp: 00:16:46)

    Key Quotes:

"You said that you felt addicted to food as a child. Now it's not possible to be addicted to food, but it is possible to feel addicted to food." (00:15:17)

"You say that you're allowing yourself to have these sweet foods, but you're only partially allowing. You're not fully allowing yourself. Right? You're partially allowing. And that's restriction just like moderation is." (00:33:41)

"Are you willing to do what it takes to live in freedom and natural nourishment? Which means allowing potential weight gain, of course, and then exploring all of what that means to you and healing from a holistic place." (00:37:19)

Accept that you are imperfect with Jade Grantham

Accept that you are imperfect with Jade Grantham

In this episode, Victoria interviews Jade Grantham, author of the memoir "Accept That You're Imperfect", about her 20-year battle with bulimia that started when she was just 12 years old. Jade shares her personal story of struggling with restrictive eating and purging behaviours, the shame and secrecy around her eating disorder, and her journey to recovery.

Come hang out with me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/victoriakleinsmanofficial/

    Work with me: https://victoriakleinsman.com/11-coaching/

    Key Discussion Points:

    - Jade's eating disorder began as a way to cope with emotions and avoid discomfort during her difficult pre-teen years (00:09:07). She internalized emotions and made food her control mechanism rather than asking for help.

    - Shame and stigma prevented Jade from vocalizing her struggles for many years. She highlights the importance of open conversations around disordered eating and mental health (00:07:15).

    - Jade reflects on the role parents can play in emotional education for children. Modeling vulnerability and asking deeper questions can encourage kids to share rather than internalize problems (00:25:11).

    - Jade's turning point came when she took ownership of her eating disorder, admitting she needed help and actively wanting to recover (00:30:33).

    - Her recovery involved relearning how to feel and regulate emotions, a difficult process of breakdown before breakthrough (00:36:58).

    - Now recovered, Jade manages residual behaviors through self-awareness, balanced eating, and movement for mental health (00:43:26).

    Key Quotes:

"The more that you understand or the more that you break down those individual emotions, the more you're able to cope with them." (00:25:55)

"All I had to do was say it out loud." (00:51:14)

    Guest Bio:

Jade Grantham is a commercial property professional and author of the memoir "Accept That You're Imperfect", which details her decades-long struggle with bulimia that began in her childhood.

    Key Discussion Points:

    - Debunking the idea that weight loss medications are a long-term solution for finding happiness and food freedom (00:01:56 - 00:03:00)

    - Letting go of external validation and truly accepting yourself is key, even if you currently like how your body looks from disordered behaviors (00:03:37 - 00:04:12)

    - Facing fears and gaining the willingness to gain weight is necessary to be able to eat without restriction (00:29:45 - 00:32:34)

    - Learning to sit with discomfort and give yourself compassion is essential (00:13:59 - 00:14:06)

    - Our bodies naturally regulate and balance nutrition when we get out of our own way and stop restricting after allowing all food (00:53:00 - 00:54:12)

    Key Quotes:

"You cannot get that unless you go through the fear. You can't. It's impossible." (00:31:16)

"Always just sit in the suck, always come out the other side." (00:56:02)

"When you overcome that, everything becomes you can then eat unrestrictedly because you're no longer afraid of weight gain if it happens or if it doesn't happen." (00:35:40)

In this episode, Victoria interviews Heidi Schauster, a nutrition and body image therapist, about supporting children in having a healthy relationship with food and their bodies. They discuss how parents can model positive behaviours, keep conversations about food neutral rather than moralistic, allow children pleasure in eating, handle picky eating, encourage movement joyfully, and more. Listeners can expect to gain insight into fostering body acceptance and food freedom for the next generation.

    Key Discussion Points:
    - How parents can support children in having a healthy relationship with food and bodies through positive modeling and neutral, non-judgmental communication (00:07:00)

    - Setting reasonable limits around certain charged "trigger" foods if needed, while still allowing pleasure and food freedom (00:17:46)

    - Letting kids tune into their bodies' natural signals and self-regulation abilities around eating (00:23:53)

    - Making physical movement a fun, family-oriented activity based on the child's natural temperament (00:35:27)

    - Signs that a child is struggling with food/body image issues and how to intervene and get professional support (00:36:43)

    Key Quotes:
"I think the more neutral and joyful and relaxed we can be around food with children, the better." (00:07:15)

"If the child is jumping up and down and saying, I want ice cream, to just say, we're not going to have ice cream tonight, but we might have it later this week. And just nonchalantly, not not with a lot of emotion." (00:17:46)

"I would say that reaching out and letting them know that you are concerned is really, really important...the sooner, the better to actually let someone know that you're concerned, and potentially bring in some help." (00:36:43)
