The Responsibility of Translating Marcus Aurelius | David Hernández de la Fuente
Today, Ryan is joined by David Hernández de la Fuente, the translator behind the Spanish edition of Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Together, they talk about the responsibility of a translator, Seneca’s legacy as a Spanish Stoic, sharing Marcus’ work with new audiences, and the renaissance of Stoicism.
David is a writer and professor of Greek philology at the University of Madrid. He brings a refreshingly positive perspective on Stoicism to the academic world, as he shares in the article: Stoicism is back: This is the ‘slave doctrine’ to understand today’s bosses and employees.

Fantastic
Always look forward to listening to an episode. Has certainly helped me across the board with the small lessons I’ve been able to apply to my own life and circumstances.
Pure spam and scam
Just a platform to promote and constantly push a relentless stream of product, both from the host and a parade of fellow grifters and shills he has on the show.
I get that some marketing is necessary to cut through in a crowded marketplace but this constant selling of books and other merchandise is nothing but an exercise in monetising the ancient art of stoic philosophy. This guy will pretty much shill anything or anyone for a buck and I thought the hustlers over on the minimalists podcast were the champion hucksters but nothing compares to the so called daily stoic.
So if you want a non stop serving of self aggrandising shallow sales pitch about how amazing Ryan holliday is and how he has somehow discovered new insights and takes on the totally freely available works of the stoics then feel free to sign up for this shillfest although nothing is free in his world folks.
Otherwise borrow or otherwise freely obtain the books and writings of the stoic thinkers and philosophers over the centuries and work it out for yourself. This guy isn’t offering anything new or insightful, just a grab bag of cliches and recycled maxims designed to do nothing but deposit money into his bank account. Don’t waste your time on it all.
A real world philosophy
I’ve just listened to your podcast with professor Jennifer Baker and was so impressed and moved by both of you and your real world thoughts. On what car a Stoic would use, my take is a Stoic would probably use any and all of these vehicles, as he or she would be focusing on the most fit for purpose not the “class” of vehicle. Your thoughts?
