    Alison Battisson is the founder of Human Rights for All (hr4a), an Australian pro-bono human rights law firm, dedicated to assisting asylum seekers, refugees and the stateless in their fight for freedom and liberty.
    She is one of Australia's top immigration lawyers, and in 2020 she managed to have the law changed for people in detention using an ancient writ of habeas corpus. This legal change will impact thousands of people. She is also a lecturer and panelist, who can speak authoritatively on a wide range of issues related to arbitrary detention, stateless persons, and the ongoing punitive policies towards such people.

    Together they discuss Australian settler history, Redfern’s evolution, religion, the police, overcoming addiction and Uncle Shane’s inspiring work returning power to Indigenous Australians through reconnection to culture and community. 


    Shane Phillips was born and raised on "The Block" in Redfern and is an outstanding community leader and respected spokesperson for Aboriginal Australians. He has cultural connections to the Bunjalung, Wonnarua, and Eora peoples. Shane is passionate about the importance of empowering Aboriginal people and is a dedicated contributor to a range of community organisations. In 2020, he was appointed the Indigenous Liaison Officer for the Royal Australian Air Force. He is also the CEO of Tribal Warriors, where he co-created of The Clean Slate Without Prejudice Program- which focused on building a relationship between the Redfern police and indigenous community, and resulted in empowering indigenous youth and reducing the crime rate in Redfern by 80 percent.

    Guest Biography
    Tara Winkler is the co-founder of Cambodian Children's Trust (CCT), which she established in 2007 with Pon Jedtha to help 14 children escape an abusive orphanage. Over the last 14 years, she has led CCT through a number of significant organisational changes, including the transition from orphanage to a family welfare model, called the Village Hive. Today, CCT is a grassroots, community-led organisation that is focused on shifting power to local communities to achieve sustainable, systemic change. Winkler testified at the Australian Parliamentary Inquiry into Modern Slavery to shine a light on the orphanage industry, fuelled by white saviourism.  Tara is now focused on furthering a movement to decolonise international development.
