Ep. 262 – Charlie O’Brien (Part 2)
We’re talking to Charlie O’Brien on our final episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Repco for 2022. In the last part of our two-part chat, Charlie talks about his years driving at the Bathurst 1000 for Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson and Tony Longhurst, his years racing NASCAR in Australia and his disastrous attempts to qualify for a Winston Cup race in the early 1990s. He also talks about racing in Super Touring, including the hilarious story behind his sponsorship by Virgin Cola, as well as racing in and winning the Bathurst 12 Hour with Mazda. Charlie also talks about coming back to race Carrera Cup in the 2000s and how it led to his final V8 Supercar race start at the 2004 Sandown 500 – and why that race remains a regret – and racing in V8 Utes. He also tackles your National Motor Racing Museum Couch Racer Questions.

Ep. 260 – Charlie O’Brien (Part 1)
We’re talking to Charlie O’Brien on this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Repco. In the first part of a two-part chat Charlie shares some amazing stories from early in his career, including getting caught racing under age and discretely resuming his career under his brother’s name, and the time he sold his grandfather’s favourite horse to buy a faster car. He also talks about buying Dick Johnson’s Zupps Torana XU-1 for his touring car debut then moving up to an L34 and setting a long-standing record for being the youngest driver to win an ATCC race, then landing his dream drive with the Holden Dealer Team – at precisely the wrong time. He also opens up about what really caused his infamous crash in practice for the 1978 Bathurst 1000 and his close friendship with Gregg Hansford.
