We're going to cover many more in the weeks and months ahead, but today was such a great opportunity to speak to what I believe is one of the world's top science writers. His name is Julian Cribb. And Julian has written many books and inspired many people, and we're going to be talking about many of those issues today.     Ron Ehrlich:            Julian, you are a

    prolific writer and I've read so many of your books and I wanted to discuss

    those with you today, but I wondered if you might just share with our listener

    a little bit about your story and what got you to this point?







    Julian

    Cribb:                 Yeah, well, as you

    say, I've been a journalist and a newspaper editor for 50 years now. I've been

    writing about science for nearly all of that time. But I've been a specialist

    science writer really since the mid 1990s. And I wrote about science because it

    was journalistic freedom to me. You can write about anything you like. And as I

    progressed in my science writing, I began bumping into more and more scientists

    and grandparents such as myself and young millennials who were all rather

    despairing and saying, "Is this the end of history as we know it?"

    And that concerned me deeply.







    Julian

    Cribb:                 What I knew was

    that we were in some considerable trouble, but I didn't know how bad that

    trouble was. But I thought as a science writer, it's possible for me to delve

    into the best science in the world and find out exactly what is going on, what

    does the best science say about the many and various risks that humanity is

    manufacturing for itself? And that's basically where it went. I started off

    looking at the food risks because that's the area that I knew best. But I

    pretty soon branched out into all the other risks as well. I've written four

    books and many thousands of articles since that time.

    Matthew, we were on a panel together a few weeks or a month or so ago. And it just struck me when I listened to your answers and, and looked at your background that we actually had a lot in common coming at it from a very different perspective. Now, you know, there's so much we're going to talk about the cause you've got a lot of really interesting skills, but, you know, I thought as a chiropractor you might just give our listener a little bit of your own journey, you know, from the moment you kind of graduated to, to this point in time, but also to remind us of what the difference is really between a chiropractor and osteopath, the physiotherapists. So I'm wondering if you might share a bit of that with our listener.

    Yeah, sure. I was kinda lucky in my life, on the journey of finding my path in that I, you know, I was pretty, I was very much into my sports when I was young and into surfing a lot. And I had a recurrent low back issue that started to happen. And a friend of the family was a chiropractor and I went and saw him and he practised the technique called Sacro occipital technique. And I was just always sorting of in awe, the way in which I could walk in, in one state and walk out in another with him only using his hands and in what seemed to be an incredibly short amount of time and, how the problem never seemed to be where I thought it was, you know, he would always,

Now we've covered the subject of sleep before, but today we're going to cover it from a slightly different perspective and I think if you were going to start good sleep habits, starting them from birth is a really good place to go. My guest today is Karen Faulkner. Karen is a registered midwife, a child and family nurse and registered baby sleep consultant. She's published, she's a pair as she's parenting author, her proven holistic approach, and I can attest to this because she has consulted with my own family and my own grandchildren and had done that, made a huge difference to their lives and the lives of many of my grandchildren's friends, young ones that is, and their parents as well. So if your baby's not sleeping, can you imagine waking up after 11 hours of uninterrupted blissful sleep?

    Well, I remember when my older daughter was born and that's now 33 is ago. The pediatrician said to us, you're the one thing you must do is in the first year of life, teach your child to sleep. Well, of course, we ignored that and it took us several years to recover from that lack of following, some very sound advice. And of course if you are not, if the baby is not sleeping and then the parents are not sleeping, then things can really start to go wrong. Not just emotionally within the family, but also health-wise. Sleep is as important to a newborn baby as it is to any of us at any age. And getting into a good sleep habit, a good sleep pattern, a good sleep routine is a really important part of building a foundation for a healthy life.     Well, Karen, sleep is a very big topic, very important topic, one that we focus on a lot in this, podcast and there's so much I want to talk with you about, but I wondered if you might share with our listener, your own journey, how you got to where you are at the moment.     Yeah. And, I was, in Manchester at finished doing a psychology degree and I got told there was no jobs for psychologists in those days. This is like the 1990s and I was told I should go and do health visiting and go back to nursing. And at the time I had no idea what health system was all about, but I knew it was a bit of which are free a bit of nursing a bit of health needs and preventing health problems, but it also had a big component of behavioral psychology and a big component was helping people, parents with their children's sleep.     know, mental health is a big issue and you may also have been told sometime in

    your life to be positive. Well, my guest today has dedicated her life to the

    science behind positive psychology, empowering individuals to be the best they

    can be. And in the process, deal with many of those mental health issues like

    depression, anxiety, and of course much more. My guest today is Dr Suzy Green.

    Now, Suzy is a psychologist, she's a life coach, an author, a speaker, and an all-round

    font of knowledge when it comes to the world of positive psychology and the

    power of positivity.

    Suzy is not only a practising psychologist, but she's also widely published in many respected journals. She's a senior lecturer in applied psychology at the University of Sydney. She is honorary vice president of the International Society for Coaching Psychology and is an affiliate of the Institute for Well-being at Cambridge University. Suzy currently holds honorary academic positions at the Centre for Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne and the Black Dog Institute. And she's also the founder of the Sydney based, The Positivity Institute, and has just written a book which we're going to discuss today called The Positivity Prescription. Suzy has literally helped thousands of Australians prevent and overcome mental health issues, and I'm really looking forward to sharing some of her knowledge with us here today.     Suzy, I know we spoke many years ago on another podcast I

    did, but I've been so looking forward to getting you onto mine. And before we

    dive in, I wondered if you could just give our listener a little bit of a short

    history of your professional journey that's led you to this point.

    Yeah, absolutely. Well, I guess I came to psychology as a mature age student in my 20s, and I realized in the very first lecture that this was my calling if you like. And it took me a long time, think eight to 10 years and two children later, I finished my masters and then a doctorate, clinical doctorate in clinical psychology. But I guess part of my doctorate, the research component was focused on evidence-based life coaching as a mental health prevention intervention, which was so unheard of in those days.     I'm well. What an interesting

    question to be asking people nowadays. It's a throwaway line in the past, how

    are you, and now it's a really serious question.







    Aaron Mckenzie:







    People are answering now.







    Dr. Ron Ehrlich:







    It's a really serious question. Tell

    me what's been happening in your life? What have you been doing? You've been

    doing so many amazing things. Share it with our listeners.







    Aaron Mckenzie:







    Well, I guess, obviously, running a

    gym and a training studio and that being my primary source of income and way of

    connecting with people, and doing what I do, having that stopped is a big shift

    and for good reason. Obviously, we're all in this situation together and then

    just trying to figure out, well, what can I do every day? I think it's easy for

    us to focus on what we can't do and get caught up in that, and get caught

    watching the news every day, and just waiting for something external to give us

    the okay, that everything's going to be all right. But my mind just won't let

    me do that. It's okay. I've got to be proactive. What can I do, myself? What

    have I got within my control to make a difference, and how can I control my own

    variables?







    Aaron Mckenzie:







    So, it's getting healthy myself is

    primary, but then trying to teach other people to have that perspective, and

    focus on themself, and use this as an opportunity to reset, to say, "Okay,

    things have been going along okay, but we can do it better." And this is

    just a wake-up call to say, "Let's get healthier. Let's get more connected

    to our food supply. Let's look after our bodies. Let's connect with the people

    that we love, and let's slow down a bit. Let's do more work from home, and just

    spend more time eating good food, not racing around, less time commuting."







    Aaron Mckenzie:







    I think there are just so many positives and no one is going to say that what's happening is okay. It's awful what's happening in hospitals. This whole situation is awful. But the fact that the whole world is just stopped, it's just proving that we can do this. We can make choices, and we can make a better world. We can enjoy this life more, and we can help people get healthier. We can do all of that. It's within our control. And it shouldn't have taken something this bad for us to realize. But I think all of us are starting to understand now that this was quite... Not as bad as it could have been. It could have been much worse. It could've been something just as contagious, but also very aggressive. And if that was the case,

    Hello and welcome to Unstress. I am Dr Ron Ehrlich. Now we've covered the topic of meditation on several shows. Today's show, we're coming at it from a slightly different angle. One of neuroscience, my guest today is a neuroscientist. She's also an innovator, a brain tech expert and cofounder of interacts on the creator of muse and award-winning brain-sensing technology. Now Harbin, the Mayo Clinic, NASA and myself are among hundreds of thousands of users of the Muse technology. It's a headband that reads brain activity the same way an AEG does. I have to admit, and this is my dental background showing through here, I do love innovation and technology, so I was attracted to this neurofeedback tool called Muse. You wear it like you do a headband and through an app on your phone. You hear your brain activity. Well, your brain activity is translated into a sound like crashing ocean.







    Dr Ron Ehrlich:







    You know, this would be an overactive mind or a calm, trickling sound of waves gently rolling into a beach. When your mind is focused. There are even little bird sounds in the background that have this tweeting sound with the calm sound of the ocean just lapping onto the beach. Now the more tweeting sounds you hear are birds, the calm, your brain is in the calm. Your mind is so you are in the zone. It's an interesting tool. Now as lots of other shows we've done on meditation will tell you, you don't need tech to meditate, but I thought this would give an interesting neuroscience view of meditation. It gives you real-time feedback. So you really do get to see what's going on or in your brain and it's an interesting learning tool. We cover some really interesting other things as well.     Ariel.  There's so much I wanted to talk to you today about your background in neuroscience. You've been a psychotherapist, you're a developer of new technology and we're going to talk about that as well. But I thought I might get you to share with us a little bit of your own background, your neuroscience. So a bit about yourself and how you got into all of that.







    Ariel Garten:







    Sure. So I come at this from a very funny angle.  , my mom's an artist, so I would see her make beautiful things on a canvas and bring amazing paintings to a life where there was nothing. And from that, I learned that you could create anything you wanted. So I was always making things. I was fascinated by how the world worked, how, why stuff was hard, why we perceive the colour red is red.  , and then I became really interested in science, which is super weird for my family who were artists and Bohemians.
