The transformation of becoming a mother

Have you heard the term matrescence? It is the transition of becoming a mother and all that goes with that. It is a process, not just a moment in time.  It is a wild, beautiful, complex and challenging process. Motherhood changes us profoundly. This is completely normal. In this episode, I chat with doula, coach and author Jessie Harrold about the massive transformational time of becoming a mother. Jessie and I chat about: Why the transition to motherhood takes 2-3 years – not just 6 weeks What matrescence is Why there is such a shift in identity as we become mothers How motherhood transforms us The impact that society has on new mothers How modern day motherhood is different from how motherhood used to be That mothering is a countercultural act The phases that women go through as they become mothers That it is expected to feel a full range of emotions in motherhood How you can heal your matrescence experience even years later after becoming a mother Jessie is a coach and doula who has support women through radical life transformations and other rites of passage for over fifteen years. She works one-on-one with women and mothers, facilitates mentorship programs, women’s circles and rituals, and hosts retreats and nature-based experiences. Jessie is the author of Mothershift:  Reclaiming Motherhood as a Rite of Passage (Shambhala 2024) and Project Body Love: My Quest to Love My Body and the Surprising Truth I Found Instead.  She is also the host of The Becoming Podcast.  Jessie lives on the east coast of Canada, where she mothers her two children, writes, and stewards the land. 3. Healing foods to eat postpartum

    Healing foods to eat postpartum

We prepare and think about birth a lot. Or at least I did.  But postpartum? Not so much.  It wasn’t until after I had both my children that I even heard of a postpartum doula. A birth doula sure, but postpartum – no.  Postpartum was a shocking reality slap. It was beautiful. It was messy. And it was the first time in my life that I craved more support on such a deep level.  Imagine how different our world would be if new mothers had extra support and delicious nourishing meals during those first few days, weeks and months after birth?  I know that my own matrescence journey would have been a little gentler with a little less nutrient depletion. How about yours?  Postpartum care and nourishment are so important. So, I asked Alicia Allison, a postpartum chef, postpartum doula and herbalist, to join me on the podcast to talk about how mothers can get more nourishment postpartum.  Alicia and I chat about:  Bringing celebration to postpartum food  How to build new postpartum traditions  Why a culture of care is what mothers need  Foods to eat when pregnant Healing foods postpartum  Why preconception is a great time to work on holistic health  The importance of agency in creating our postpartum experience  Herbs to support mothers postpartum  Not only is Alicia a postpartum chef, postpartum doula, and herbalist, but she is also a yoga teacher, lactation counsellor, somatic wellness practitioner. She is a pioneer and leader in postpartum nutrition. Over more than a decade of working as a postpartum chef and doula, Alicia has supported over 80 families during the fourth trimester. She created NOURISH, a program that educates and mentors home chefs and postpartum doulas to provide care to more families during those postpartum weeks and months. Alicia is dedicated to helping others heal, nurture their bodies and bring life into this world in a way that elevates our collective consciousness.  Episode Links:  Say hi to Alicia on Instagram   Join NOURISH: The Art of Supporting Families as a Postpartum Chef  Check out Alicia’s website  Learn more about what Alicia has to offer  Book recommended by Alicia  The First Forty Days  Come say hello to me over on Instagram  Grab a copy of my book, The Motherhood Reset Check out other my other podcast episodes & articles   Listen and Subscribe to Wild + Well on: Apple Podcast | Spotify
