How are women working together to help end the cycle of poverty for widows? Robin Wright & Heather Leathers

In this edition of Pillow Talk by Pour Les Femmes, Robin Wright speaks with Heather Ibrahim-Leathers, the founder of Global Fund for Widows, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering widows and female heads of households to overcome poverty through skills-based training, job creation, and micro-finance. Robin talks with Heather about how the trajectory of Heather’s own life can be traced back to the widowhood of her grandmother who, when her husband died unexpectedly, was a young mother with four children living in Alexandria, Egypt. Left with nothing by her husband’s family, Eugine Awadalla became part of the story of the cycle of poverty that widowhood often perpetuates on women in many traditional hierarchical societies. According to UN Women, the world is not on track to achieving gender equality by 2030 which is a goal world leaders have set as part of the Sustainable Development Goals agenda. In many countries, women who face the additional challenge of widowhood must also overcome long-standing cultural practices and lack of legal standing around inheritance, discrimination, and even violence. So not only is eradicating discrimination around widowhood critical to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals it is central to securing the rights of women more broadly. The goal of the Global Fund for Widows is to raise awareness at the national and international level around the plight of widows so that widowhood itself is recognized as the drain on society that it is. In addition, GFW supports programs in many countries that help widows achieve financial stability, and self-sufficiency, and helps these women become leaders in their communities.

What does it mean to demonstrate resilience through adversity? Robin Wright & Tim Quinn

In this episode of Pillow Talk, Robin Wright talks with Tim Quinn, co-founder of skincare line Halo 42 and the former lead make-up artist for L’Oreal’s Giorgio Armani Beauty, about what it takes to harness our inner strength in the face of adversity. Rather than dwelling in grief after experiencing setbacks and personal loss, Tim has been able to move forward by creating a life focused on giving back and supporting causes that inspire him. From donating his time and talent for Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative, raising money for HPV and cancer research with the Farrah Fawcett Foundation, teaching beauty techniques to people with cancer with Look Good Feel Better, or his advocacy for autism research with Peace Love Solve, Tim has navigated his way through personal losses by investing in the karma bank in a huge way. Why should we care about problems in other countries? Robin Wright & John Prendergast

Here at Pour Les Femmes, we’re often asked, “with so many problems here at home, why is it important to help people in other countries?”  In this episode of Pillow Talk by Pour Les Femmes, Robin Wright talks with activist John Prendergast about the war in Eastern Congo that began in the late 1990s. Often called Africa’s First World War, the resulting devastation of the lives of the people in the region made such an impression on Robin that she joined with John in his efforts to amplify the voices of the women on their plight in one of the poorest countries in the world.  Through his efforts with The Enough Project and The Sentry, John Prendergast has been at the center of efforts to shine a light on and disrupt the economic drivers of war in mineral-rich African countries. In particular, he's been outspoken about the need for the global consumer electronics industry to develop and maintain a clean supply chain, especially where so-called "conflict minerals" are concerned, in order to create conditions for peace, human rights, and good governance in nations that have long struggled to provide even a basic standard of living for its citizens.  Eradicating poverty is the goal that leaders from countries around the world have identified as most critical for the peace and prosperity of the planet. That's why creating opportunities for people in places like the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to work and earn a living is so critical.   Pour Les Femmes supports the goal of decent work and economic growth through its partnership with small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) like the GiveWork program in the DRC which provides 1 to 3 days of work at fair wages with every garment they produce. This allows the women of the GiveWork program to support themselves and their families, obtain an education, and break their country’s cycle of poverty and violence.   In a world that’s more interlinked than ever, it’s important that we make choices that support sustainability and encourage dignity, peace, and prosperity for everyone on the planet. How can helping others lead to your own success? Robin Wright & Alfonso Carrion

When we make helping others a primary goal of our personal and professional lives, something amazing can happen. Whether you're trying to break into Hollywood or pursuing career aspirations of your own, creating authentic relationships and helping others can be the key to your own success.   In this episode of Pillow Talk, Robin Wright speaks to our very own Pillow Talk film editor Alfonso Carrion about how he broke into the career of his dreams, first working nights and weekends and eventually working his way up to land jobs on major feature films and on House of Cards with Robin. Alfonso talks about the importance of building meaningful and reciprocal relationships, especially in Hollywood where the phrase "it's who you know" really is key.  In fact, Alfonso believes so deeply in the power of giving back that he's made helping others the center of his professional life. He started his own mentorship program called Ask the Fonz which offers a free learning portal on YouTube and social media which provides access to a community of aspiring film editors from around the world.  As everyone increasingly turns to online video for communication and storytelling of all kinds, Alfonso has never been busier as a film editor. He now finds himself in the middle of a network of friends, colleagues, and opportunities for career growth that are the direct result of nurturing relationships and helping others all along his path.
