    Let’s get started! The first word is surpass...surpass… To surpass means to become better, greater, or stronger than..~보다 더 좋아지다..더 커지다..더 강해지다… 이런 뜻이 있습니다.. 즉 능가하다...뛰어넘다 란 뜻이죠. Jane surpassed all our expectations..제인은 우리 모두의 예상을 뛰어넘었어요. Attendance is expected to surpass last year's record. Repeat 참석자 수가 작년의 기록을 넘을 것으로 예상됩니다. The second word is preceding...preceding.. It means existing, coming, or occurring immediately before in time or place.. 시간과 장소에 있어서 바로 앞에 존재하거나 오거나 혹은 일어나는 이란 뜻입니다. preceding paragraphs..앞에 나온 단락.. The preceding day. 그 전날.. In conclusion, I hope the preceding arguments have convinced you of the need for action. 결론적으로, 앞선 토론들이 여러분들에게 행동이 필요하다는 것을 설득했기를 바랍니다. The third word is strain... strain… Strain means a force or influence that stretches, pulls, or puts pressure on something, sometimes causing damage.. 가끔가다 손상을 입히는 끌어당기거나 압박을 주는 힘..이런 뜻인데요.. The hurricane put such a strain on the bridge that it collapsed. 그 다리는 허리케인의 힘에 못이겨 무너지고 말았다. As you get older, excess weight puts a lot of strain on the heart. 나이가 들수록, 몸무게가 늘면 심장에 무리를 준다. Their constant arguments were putting a strain on their marriage. 계속되는 싸움으로 그들의 결혼생활에 금이가기 시작했다.     The coronavirus death toll in China has risen to 811, surpassing the toll from the SARS epidemic of 2002-3, according to official data released on Sunday. (Repeat slowly and fast) 중국의 코로나바이러스로 인한 사망자가 2002년과 2003년을 강타한 사스로 인한 사망자 수를 초과한 811명이 되었다고 어제 발표되었습니다. Surpass..surpass… Death toll..death toll... The number of confirmed infections rose to 37,198, according to China’s National Health Commission. Eighty-nine deaths and 2,656 new cases were recorded in the preceding 24 hours, most of them in Hubei Province, the heart of the outbreak.     5 Minute English Episode 243 (코비 브라이언트를 보내며....)

    The first sentence that we are going to learn is Kobe Bryant inspired a generation of basketball players worldwide with sublime skills and an unquenchable competitive fire. 다시한번 읽어 볼게요. 코비 브라이언트는 절묘한 기술과 채울수 없는 경쟁심으로 전세계에 있는 농구 선수들의 한 세대에 깊은 영감을 주었다. 여기서 중요한 것은 sublime 이란 단어와 unquenchable competitive fire 입니다. 정말 농구 기술이 뛰어났는데 그걸 그냥 단순하게 좋은 훌륭한 이런 단어를 가지고 표현한 것이 아니라 sublime... 감탄을 할 정도로 절묘해서 숭고까지 한 기술이란 뜻입니다. He transforms the most ordinary subject into the sublime. 그는 지극히 평범한 소재를 절묘한 것으로 바꿔 놓는다. 단순한 단어를 쓰는 것이 아니라 멋진 단어를 적절하게 활용할 수 있는 것이 중요한거죠. Unquenchable..quench 라는 말은 갈증을 풀다..불을 끄다..이런 말인데요..이전에 히딩크 감독님이 나는 아직도 배가 고프다라고 말했잖아요? 그거랑 같은 맥락의 말입니다..아무리 우승을 하고 점수를 넣어도 그 갈망이 없어지지가 않는..competitive fire 경쟁심이란 거죠.. 굳이 여기서 왜 fire 라는 말을 썼을까요? 코비가 농구 코트에 있으면 그 이기려고 하는 마음이 활활 타고 있었기 때문이지 않을까 그런 생각을 하고.. 또 그 fire 를 끌수 있는이란 뜻의 quench에서 나온 말 unquenchable 과 함께 쓴 것입니다. He had an unquenchable thirst for life. 그는 삶에 대해 채울 수 없는 갈증을 지니고 있었다. sublime skills and an unquenchable competitive fire. The second sentence is Less than four years into his retirement, Bryant was seizing new challenges. Four years into his retirement...은퇴에 들어간지 4년이 되지 않아…은퇴한지 4년 이 되지 않아..이렇게 표현을 하구요.. seizing new challenges ..여기서 중요한게 seize라는 동사를 어떻게 사용했는가를 봐야합니다. 원래 seize 가 무슨 뜻이죠? 꽉 붙잡다...장악하다..체포하다..기회를 붙잡다... 이렇게 사전에는 나오는데요..마음에 와 닿아야 쓸수 있습니다 이런 단어는..to seize means to take an opportunity eagerly and decisively. 즉 열정적으로 그리고 결단력있게 어떤 기회를 붙잡는다 이런 뜻이죠.. 은퇴를 하고 난 뒤 그냥 빈둥빈둥 노는 것이 아니라 아주 열정적으로 새로운 도전을 하고 있었단 뜻입니다. 두번째 문장 four years into his retirement, he was seizing new challenges.. 오늘 배운것 복습 Listen and repeat Sublime skills and an unquenchable competitive fire..repeat Four years into his retirement, he was seizing new challenges..

    5 Minute English Episode 242 (이실직고 하다..하는 시늉만 하다..이런 표현들..배워봐요!)

    The first expression that we’re going to learn is “come clean about” (비밀로 하던 것을) 실토하고 나서다..이런 말입니다. 예를 한번 들어볼까요? Mom, I need to come clean about the vase, I broke it, not Tommy. 엄마..화분에 대해서 솔직하게 말씀드릴게 있어요...타미가 아니라 사실은 제가 깨뜨렸어요. I think it is time that you came clean about what you’ve been doing! 니가 그동안 뭘하고 있었는지 솔직하게 말할때가 된것 같아. Come clean about...come clean about... The second expression is do a double take...do a double take.. 이건 무슨 소릴까용? 전혀 예상치 못하고 너무 깜짝 놀라서 이게 맞나? 이러면서 한번 더 보게되는 상황이 있죠? 예를 들면 고등학교때 좀 촌스럽던 남자사람친구가 대학에 가서 갑자기 만찢남이 된거죠.. 그럼 쟤가 쟤가 맞나? 이러면서 눈을 비비고는 다시 한번 보죠? 바로 그때 do a double take 라고 씁니다. Everyone did a double take at his shiny new sports car as he drove by. 그가 차를 몰고 갈때 모두가 그의 번쩍거리는 새 스포츠카를 놀라서 두번 처다보았다. His parents did a double take when he had his hair dyed pink. 그가 머리를 핑크색으로 염색했을때 그의 부모님은 너무 놀라서 한번 더 쳐다보았다.. Double take...do a double take.. The third expression is go through the motions.. Go through the motions.. 이건 무슨 말일까요? It means to do something without making much effort to do it well.. 이건 일을 잘 하려고 노력을 하지 않고 그냥 하는 거죠..시늉만 한다 이런 말입니다. Captain Slacker only has a week left at this job, so he’s not working very hard – he’s just going through the motions. 캡틴 슬랙커는 이제 1주일만 일하면 이 일을 그만둘거에요 그래서 일을 열심히 하지 않아요..그냥 하는 시늉만 하는 거죠… 남친이나 여친이랑 싸울때 듣는 시늉만 하고 그러면 ..you don’t really care, do you? You’re just going through the motions right now.. 이젠 뭐 신경 한쓰지? 그냥 시늉만 하고 있는거야..이렇게 말할수도 있겠죠..     5 Minute English Episode 241 (꼭..이런 사람 한사람은 아는데...)

    오늘은 특정한 타입의 사람들을 묘사하는 재밌는 표현들을 배워보겠습니다. 왜 우리 주위를 둘러보면 꼭 이런 사람들 한 두명씩은 있지 않나요? We all know at least one person who is like that… Let’s get started! The first type of person is a bombaster..bombaster… 자 bombast 라는 말 자체가 겉만 번드르르한 말을 말합니다. 그럼 겉만 번드르르 하게 말하는 사람을 bombaster..bombaster 라고 합니다. Bombaster….bombaster… The second type of person is a delusionist...delusionist.. Delusion 이 무슨 말이죠? 바로 망상..착각..오해...이런 말이죠? 사실이 아닌데 그걸 사실이라고 착각을 하거나 망상을 하는 사람..있지 않나요? 식샤를 합시다 season 1에 나오는 오도연 변호사라고 생각이 나시나요? 왜 항상 김변호사가 자기를 챙겨주고 윤두준 씨가 자기를 좋아한다고 착각을 혼자서 하고 있잖아요? 바로 그런 사람을 delusionist...라고 합니다. The third type of person is misologist….misologist… 이건 어떤 사람을 말할까요? 논의, 추론, 깨우침 을 싫어하는 사람을 misologist 라고 합니다. 그냥 아 몰라 몰라~됐어~ 복잡해서 알고 싶지 않아.. 머릿속에서 떠오르는 사람 있엇죠? 바로 그 사람이 misologist 입니다. The 4th type of person is kinda funny..buttinsky...buttinsky. ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ 이 말 가끔가다 저도 하는데 사실 참견하다 끼어들다라는 뜻의 butt in 이라는 단어와 슬라빅 언어에서 사람이라는 뜻을 가진 sky 를 합쳐서 만든 일종의 말장난입니다. 참견쟁이..이런 사람을 buttinsky 라고 합니다.

    5 Minute English Episode 240 (young sheldon 시트콤으로 다시 돌아왔습니다!)

    Today we are going to learn some clips from a sitcom called Young Sheldon. Needless to say, it is a spin-off prequel to the big bang theory. 오늘은 영 쉘던이라는 시트콤에서 클립 몇개를 듣고 재밌는 표현 몇가지들을 배워보겠습니다. 물론 이 시트콤이 빅뱅이론의 프리퀄 스핀 오프라는 말은 안해도 되겠죠? Let’s listen to the first clip 뭐라고 했죠? ____ 여기서 중요한 표현은 Do my bidding ….do my bidding…to do someone’s bidding 이란 말은 To do what someone else wants or has requested, to the point of servitude. 즉 누가 시키는 대로 하다 이런 말입니다. Am I expected to do your bidding whenever you ask? 네가 부탁할 때마다 내가 네 말을 들어줘야 돼? Do someone’s bidding...repeat Let’s listen to the 2nd clip! You’re not gonna impress me by throwing money around...아 이말 참 괜찮은 말입니다. You’re not gonna impress me..너는 나한테 감명을 주지 않을거야...즉 내가 너한테 반하지 않아.. Throw money around..돈을 뿌린다라는 말이죠? 즉 돈자랑을 한다는 말이죠.. 즉 you’re not gonna impress me by throwing money around 란 말은 니가 돈자랑을 한다고 내가 반할것 같아? 이말입니다. 때때로 돈을 허투루 쓰고 다닐때도 이 말을 씁니다. Tom lost his job, but still seems to have plenty of money to throw around. 탐은 실직을 했는데도 돈을 뿌리고 다니는 모양이네… Throw money around...throw money around The third clip You’re celebrating mediocrity! Mediocrity! ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 이 말이 무슨 뜻인지 설명 하기전에 배경을 설명할게요. 쉘던이 학교에서 하는 과학경진대회 science fair 에서 1등을 받지 못해서 화를 내면서 이렇게 말을 한겁니다. You’re celebrating mediocrity! Mediocrity! 자 여기서 중요한 말은 mediocrity...이게 무슨 말인지 잘 모르시는 분들도 많으실것 같은데요..mediocre 보통밖에 되지 않는 이란 형용사 mediocre 의 명사형 mediocrity..평범함 이란 뜻입니다. 쉘던은 천재라서 평균의 high school의 아이들이 하는 모든것이 전부 다 자신의 excellence 와는 비교가 되겠죠..그래서 이렇게 소리칩니다. 평범함을 찬양하고 있어요 여러분들은! 쉘던..어릴때나 어른이나..살짝 annoying 한건 마찬가지인것 같네요 ㅎㅎㅎ Anyway let’s review what we learned today.     5 Minute English Episode 239 (미해군제독 William McRaven 텍사스 대학 졸업연설중)

    Let’s listen to the first clip. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. 매일 아침 이불을 갠다면 하루의 첫번째 일과를 완성하게 되는 것입니다. The second clip And it will give you a small sense of pride...a small sense of pride...작은 자부심을 심어줄겁니다. And it will encourage you to do another task..and another..and another...그리고 또다른 일들을 계속해서 할수 있게 격려해줄겁니다. And by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. 그러다 보면 하루가 다 끝날때쯤엔 많은 일들이 끝나 있을 겁니다. The third clip Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that the little things in life matter. 이불을 개는 것은 인생에 작은일들이 중요하다는 사실을 강화 시킬것입니다. The 4th clip If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. 작은일을 제대로 하지 못한다면 큰 일 또한 절대 제대로 할수 없을겁니다. And if by chance you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that’s made. 혹시라도 만에하나 기운 빠지는 하루를 보냈다 하더라도 집에 오면 잘정리된 이부자리가 당신을 맞이 할겁니다. That you made! 바로 당신이 정리한 이부자리요! The 5th clip And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better. 잘 정리된 이부자리는 내일은 좀 더 나을 거라는 용기를 여러분께 줄겁니다. So if you wanna change the world, start off by making your bed. 세상을 바꾸고 싶으시다면 이부자리부터 정리하세요!

    5 Minute English Episode 238 (잘가 이 지긋지긋한 것아! 아...너무 창피해서 할말이 없을때..영화에서 나온 말을 공부해요!)

    행복한 화요일입니다 여러분. 5분 영어 238번째 에피소드에 오신걸 환영합니다. 전 이 프로그램의 진행자 제입니다. So you guys were probably wondering why I wasn’t updating the podcast..well I had to take a big exam and I passed with flying colors! And I am back now! So let’s get started with today’s lesson! The first expression is take it away! Take it away! 가지고 가세요...이런 말이 아니라 사실은 가수..공연을 시작하려고 할때 바로 이말을 합니다. 혹시 배우 이덕화 아저씨가 옛날에 토토즐이라는 프로그램에서 가수들을 소개할때 했던 말 부탁해요~ 기억하시나요? 바로 시작해주세요..부탁해요~take it away! 이 말입니다. The second expression is la di da...la di da..la..la… 사실 이 말은 원래 고상한척 하는..그리고 그런 사람을 놀릴 때 쓰는 말이었는데요. ㅇ 이건 혹시 어디서 나온 표현인줄 아세요? 바로 우디 앨런의 1977 년 영화 annie hall 에서 나온 표현입니다. 굉장히 유명한 영화대사죠. 배경을 설명을 할게요. Diane Keaton이 맡은 Annie Hall 이라는 여주인공이 Woody Allen이 맡은 Alvy Singer 라는 남주인공과 처음만나서 말을 걸고 있는 상황인데요. 여자가 남자한테 말을 걸려고 하니 많이 긴장을 했는지 애니가 계속 엉뚱한 소리를 하면서 떠들어 대다가 자기가 듣기에도 한심하다고 생각을 했는지 ㅎㅎㅎ la dee da...la dee da..la la...이러면서 돌아서는 장면이 있습니다..잠깐 들어볼까요? Clip 와 여자든 남자든 누구나 다 공감할 수 있는 상황이죠...ㅎㅎㅎㅎ 이런 이런..창피해..입 이제 다물어야하는데...뭐 어쩌겠어.. omg..i just said something stupid..god i hope he doesn’t hate me..eh..if he does..what am I gonna do now? 이 모든 뜻이 다 함축이 되어있는 말입니다. 정말 엉뚱한 행동을 해서 창피하고 할 말을 잃었을때 la di da...la di da..la la..yeah… The third expression is hasta la vista baby! Hasta la vista baby! 이게 뭔 말이냐...스페니쉬로 안녕! 이란 뜻인데요. 이거 어디서 들어보지 않으셨나요? 바로 1991년 영화 터미네이터 2에서 아놀드 슈왈제네거가 했던 말이죠.. 뭔가 지독하게 힘든 일이 끝났을때 우후! 끝났어! 잘가라 이 지긋지긋한 것아1 이런 상황에서 터미네이터가 말한 것 처럼 hasta la vista baby! 이렇게 말하면 됩니다. 물론 연애를 하다가 별로 괜찮지 않은 사람이랑 헤어질때 말해도 되겠죵? 오늘 배운것 복습할게요.
