Get On Purpose with Karen James Podcast

We’ve heard it time and time again, this idea of purpose being at the heart of our lives, but have you stopped to look at what ‘living on purpose’ actually means for you? The world is an increasingly noisy place, at home, at work and pretty much everywhere you go. How do you distil it all and make sure you’re not filling time with busy activities which may not actually matter? How do you work, or run a business, or live your life and not get to the end of your day, or year or worse your life and say what was that all about? In the words of Mark Twain, “Two of the most important days in your life are the day you were born and the day you find out why”. Get on Purpose is the podcast where we fuse what matters most in your life, and business, to create your blueprint and framework to get clear, get moving and get results. Each week your host, the informed and infectious Karen James, guides you towards what matters most as the key to living on purpose in business and in life.

Episode 20 - Business on Purpose

In Season 1 we talked about you and creating your blueprint, Season 2 was with conversations with people who are living their purpose and with this new third Season, we will explain closely the intersection of three areas - capital markets, global needs and human behaviours and how they all work together. In Season 3 I will talk about three people I follow closely Blackrock's CEO Larry Fink, Marvin Oka and Professor Muhammd Yunus.   In Larry's 2018 open letter to CEO A Sense of Purpose he talks about why all corporations need a long-term growth strategy of stakeholder engagement on a global platform and the need to move away from short-term pressures. "Without a sense of purpose, no company, either public or private, can achieve its full potential. It will ultimately lose the license to operate from key stakeholders. It will succumb to short-term pressures to distribute earnings, and, in the process, sacrifice investments in employee development, innovation, and capital expenditures that are necessary for long-term growth. It will remain exposed to activist campaigns that articulate a clearer goal, even if that goal serves only the shortest and narrowest of objectives. And ultimately, that company will provide subpar returns to the investors who depend on it to finance their retirement, home purchases, or higher education."Larry Fink   Today's GOPA – Read Larry's 2018 and 2017 open letter to CEOs A Sense of Purpose See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 18 - Nobel Peace Prize Recipient, Professor Muhammad Yunus

Today on the podcast we have the unique privilege of being in conversation with Nobel Peace Prize Recipient, Professor Muhammad Yunus talking about his own purpose and valuable view on building social businesses to solve global problems. We also discuss his new book A World of Three Zeros: The New Economics of Zero Poverty, Zero Unemployment, and Zero Net Carbon Emissions. Professor Yunus is a Bangladeshi social entrepreneur, banker, economist, and civil society leader who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance. These loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. In this episode we discuss: Professor Yunus’ purpose that includes focus on reforming the education system so that young people can discover their purpose as well as get the knowledge to reach their full potential whilst creating positive change in the world. Professor Yunus’ designed his purpose by simply wanting to be useful to another person. When he found he was useful to one person, he realised his solution was relevant to more than one person and started helping more than one person and expanding to solve global problems. That no problem is a local problem, everything is a global problem. Professor Yunus' leadership style focuses on stubbornness to ensure you can work with those who can't yet see the value in your solutions to be successful in creating change. The importance of belief and faith in your cause, so that all ‘impossibles’ could be ‘possibles’. How Professor Yunus’ new book 'The World of Three Zeroes' shares the story of his life to help lead you in creating, leading  and operating a profitable social business. How only a handful of people control the world's wealth and how this situation worsens with a focus on self interest. How to view the world through bifocal glasses with dollar signs in one lens to look after ourselves, but then also a humanitarian lens to look after others through creating social business that solve global problems. Finally, we discuss the importance of knowing and using your incredible power.
