Dr. Kim Tran, Associate Professor of Psychology at Fayetteville State University

Kimberly (Kim) Tran, PhD, HSP-P is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Fayetteville State University. She is also a licensed psychologist in the State of North Carolina with a private practice in the community. Her research, teaching and clinical practice areas are framed by a multicultural and affirmative lens focused on military/veteran/family mental health, college student behavioral health, suicide, trauma/PTSD/MST/anxiety/depression, substance use disorders, chronic pain management, stress resilience and mind-body-spirit wellness. While at Fayetteville State University, Kim won both the Department of Psychology Excellence in Teaching and College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher of the Year awards. Dr. Shaily Patel, Assistant Professor of Early Christianity at Virginia Tech

Shaily Patel is an historian of early Christianity who studies ancient magic, Graeco-Roman religions, and how Christians fashioned their identity by negotiating two opposing cultural trends: the charismatic allure of the magician figure and the simultaneous vilification of that same figure in Roman literature of the period. Magic made Christianity in a lot of ways, and Shaily likes to think about all the different ways identities are constructed in the ancient world. She earned an MA from the University of Chicago and an MTS from Vanderbilt Divinity School before completing her PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. E. Patrick Johnson is Dean of the School of Communication and Annenberg University at Northwestern University. A scholar/artist, Johnson performs nationally and internationally and has published widely in the areas of race, gender, sexuality and performance. Johnson is a prolific performer and scholar, and an inspiring teacher, whose research and artistry has greatly impacted African American studies, Performance studies, and Gender and Sexuality studies. He is the author, editor, or co-editor of several award-winning books, including his most recent two: Black. Queer. Southern. Heidi McCann, Doctoral Student and Librarian

Heidi McCann is currently a full-time doctoral student working on a degree in Educational Research and Policy Analysis, aiming for a December 2020 graduation. She has worked for over 25 years at libraries in higher education including UMass Amherst and Amherst College - mostly in Reference and Instructional Services, but also as a Serials Cataloguer in Technical Services and within Archives and Special Collections. The last 14 years of her career were at a community college in Central Massachusetts where she finished her tenure as Dean of Library and Academic Support Services, overseeing tutoring and placement testing, in addition to library services. Dr. Thomas Phillips, Composer, Novelist, and Teacher

Thomas Phillips is a composer, novelist, and teacher known for the minimalist aesthetic that informs his work. In addition to numerous music releases, installations, and collaborations in dance and theater, he is the author of novels, short story collections, and scholarly monographs, recent examples of which focus on literary horror and cultural theory. Robert Newman, President and Director of the National Humanities Center

Since 2015, Robert D. Newman has served as president and director of the National Humanities Center, working to broaden the Center's scholarly mission, diversity, programming, and educational outreach as well as to encourage vibrant public engagement with, and national advocacy for, the humanities. Dr. Newman was previously Dean of the College of Humanities, Professor of English, and Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Utah and also has held faculty appointments at the University of South Carolina, Texas A&M University, and the College of William and Mary. A literary scholar by training, Newman's scholarship has focused on twentieth-century English literature and culture and narrative theory. He has published six books, numerous articles, reviews, and poems, and, for the past nineteen years, he has been General Editor of the “Cultural Frames, Framing Culture” series published by the University of Virginia Press. Wendy Naus, Executive Director of the Consortium of Social Science Associations

Wendy Naus (rhymes with BOSS or SAUCE) became the fourth Executive Director of the Consortium of Social Science Associations in 2014 following a decade of lobbying for the federal research and policy interests of scientific societies and U.S. universities. Over her career, she has worked to shape legislation, programs, and regulations important to the research community and has advocated for increased research funding across federal agencies. In her role at COSSA, Wendy serves as the lead advocate for federal funding and policy that positively impact social and behavioral science research across the federal government, representing the breadth of the social science research enterprise. Catharine "Cappy" Bond Hill, Managing Director at Ithaka S+R

As managing director, Catharine (“Cappy”) Bond Hill leads Ithaka S+R’s research and consulting initiatives to broaden access to higher education, reduce costs, and improve student outcomes. A noted economist whose work focuses on higher education affordability and access, as well as on economic development and reform in Africa, Cappy joined Ithaka S+R in September, 2016. She oversees Ithaka S+R’s two program areas, working to help the higher education, library, scholarly communication, and museum communities adapt to the technological and economic context of the 21st century. From 2006 to 2016, Cappy served as the 10th president of Vassar College. Under her leadership, Vassar reinstated need-blind admissions and replaced loans with grants in financial aid for low-income families. In 2015 the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, awarded Vassar the inaugural million-dollar prize for Equity in Educational Excellence for its efforts to expand access and support to students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds. While at Vassar, Cappy also established a first-of-its-kind veterans admission partnership with the Posse Foundation, with Vassar enrolling its first eleven veterans as freshmen in 2013. Prior to her Vassar presidency, Cappy was the provost of Williams College, where she had chief academic and financial officer responsibilities. She originally joined the economics faculty at Williams in 1985. From 1994-1997, Cappy lived in the Republic of Zambia, working in the Ministry of Finance and with the Bank of Zambia. Cappy serves on the board of the Yale-NUS College and is senior fellow on the Yale Board of Trustees. Cappy graduated from Williams College, earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree at Brasenose College, Oxford University. She completed her doctorate in economics at Yale University. Jim Grossman, Executive Director of The American Historical Association

James Grossman is Executive Director of the American Historical Association. Formerly Vice-President for Research and Education at the Newberry Library, he has taught at the University of Chicago and University of California, San Diego. The author of Land of Hope: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration and A Chance to Make Good: African-Americans, 1900-1929, Grossman was project director/co-editor of the print and digital Encyclopedia of Chicago and co-editor of the series "Historical Studies of Urban America." Articles and short essays have focused on urban history, African American history, ethnicity, higher education, and the place of history in public culture. Short pieces have appeared in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Time, Chronicle of Higher Education, and elsewhere. Grossman’s consulting experience includes history-related projects generated by the BBC, Smithsonian, and various theater companies, films, museums, and libraries. Currently, President of the National Humanities Alliance, he has served on governing boards of the American Council of Learned Societies, Association of American Colleges and Universities, and Center for Research Libraries. Patricia Hwse, Program Officer for Public Knowledge

Patricia Hswe is the program officer for Public Knowledge at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which she joined in 2016. Previously, she worked in the libraries at Penn State University, where she co-founded the department of publishing and curation services (now the department of research informatics and publishing) and at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she was program manager for grant initiatives funded by the Library of Congress and by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Originally a Russian literature scholar, Patricia holds a PhD from Yale University in Slavic languages and literatures. She also received an AB in Russian language and literature from Mount Holyoke College and an MS in library and information science from the University of Illinois. Patricia has headed a variety of committees in professional associations, including the Committee on Information Technology, in the Modern Language Association, and is currently a member of the Executive Council of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.
