203: 3 Focal Areas to Transform Your Teaching

When you first begin teaching, there are so many changes you want to make to your instructional practice. Knowing what tweaks to make and which ones to save for later can be a daunting task. This podcast episode will walk you through 3 focal areas of your instruction that will have the biggest impact on student achievement and your own teaching proficiency. This way you get more bang for your buck with every change you make.

QuotablesStudent achievement and teacher proficiency are HUGE in how we measure our educational effectiveness.

Some of these tasks are time sucks and they aren’t making us stronger and better for the kids we lead every single day in the classroom.

What do you with the initial outline determines how effective in the classroom you will become.

All the structures we put in place are going to be re-usable.

I diminished their ability to make the choice for themselves.

Instead of requiring kids to behave in a certain manner, I could set up the classroom in a way so that they could operate as independents while yet still adhering to requirements.

All this foundational work you are doing will lead to you and students finding freedom in the classroom.

Student engagement puts the power back into the students ‘hands and gives them unique opportunities to work with each other and the content to have a deeper understanding

202: Where are your Chapters Leading You?

202: Where are your Chapters Leading You?

The chapters in your life are leading you somewhere. You have the choice where that destination is and you have the control along the way to shift your path if you so choose. Tune in to hear about 3 pivotal moments in my educational career that acted as catapults into the next chapter of a bigger, better version of myself.

Quotables:I realized there were a few chapters in my life that were cornerstones for my own development. I see them as dog eared pages in my life book. Chapters I want to go back to and remember the impact that it offered.

You might feel stuck in your situation sometimes, but every day you can take action steps that will change the trajectory of your path even if by one degree.

One thing every leader of mine knew is that I had a thirst to get better.

I realized how important is was for me to get out of my environment. To see strong instruction from every perspective I could.

Everyone has something to showcase and everyone has something to learn.

Never before had I felt like I had such an impact on our future.

We are stronger more brilliant together than alone.

If I really want to have the impact I desire as an educator, I had to get serious about working on my craft.

You hold the compass to the direction of your journey as an educator

When you prioritize your own development, you affect change in everyone else you lead.

201: Listen to the Voice Within

201: Listen to the Voice Within

Sometimes we ignore our inner voice that prompts us to discover our greatest assets. We are too consumed with fitting in when we need to stand out in our own unique way. Our gifts will not only enhance our lives, but those around us who we lead. Tune in to hear 3 practical steps you can take in the new year to listen to the voice within so that you can grow to your truest potential.

    Quotables

We are all born with something that sets us apart.

Our greatest asset can’t reach its potential if you’re spending all of your time and energy holding it beneath the surface.

You are literally throwing out your gifts instead of putting them to good use.

Just because you’re a natural, doesn’t mean you’re an expert.

New year’s resolutions aren’t just statements that we write. They are north stars to carry us into our potential.

Let’s stop being carbon copies of what we THINK we should be and let’s be the true authentic original copy that we were born to be.

This episode thanks you the listener for all the hard work you have been doing investing in your own potential. Your favorite past episodes are revisited, past guests make an appearance and I share an action step to bring your 2020 goals to fruition. Tune in to remain empowered for 200 more episodes!

Quotables:You take the tips you’ve gained from my lessons learned and you’ve spruced them up to fit your circumstances

You might not think you have anything spectacular to say, show or share with colleagues, but everyone has something to contribute if you’re willing to connect.

We are all different but we have one common thread that brings us together, developing our educator craft.

Instead of running a marathon, we are gonna run a few miles at a time.

Listener Comments:It's helped me realize that maybe I'm not ready to change careers yet; I might have a purpose to keep teaching a bit longer.

All of the podcasts have given me something to think about and use in my career.

This podcast has helped me tremendously set boundaries as a teacher. The best advice I have received from this podcast has been to not worry about the things that are beyond my control. There has been a lot of uncertainty in my position recently and that has been helpful for dealing with that stress.

Seeing that I am not alone and that what I have learned I can make accommodations to use with my learners

Helpful little snippets to address those little annoyances and issues!!

Helped make me a better coach/educator.

I listen to be uplifted and reminded as to why I became a teacher in the first place. Thank you Gretchen for calling me, and reminding me, than I am ELITE. I have been empowered.

    198: Establishing a Positive Culture

    198: Establishing a Positive Culture

It’s not all rainbows and butterflies in a classroom or school building. Sometimes the negativity can spread like wild fire and deteriorate a class or school culture. Tune in to hear how to initiate a positive culture, rebuild a culture when it’s broken, and turn around a negative culture. Not only will teachers learn tips for the classroom and teacher leaders for the school, but a secret trick is shared for how to maintain a positive culture once it is established.
    Quotables

A positive culture is something that can feel like takes FOREVER to establish and can go away almost immediately
Establishing a positive culture is a long game strategy, not a quick fix
You aren’t above them, you are them.
Students don’t expect perfection in the classroom, but they expect you to have their backs and to never give up on them.
You are leaders in your classroom and school building for a reason, but it doesn’t mean you don’t have room to grow

Awesome show!

Loved the episode called 'Failure means not yet'. Its true, we can learn so much from our failures, which gives us another reason to try again! Enjoyed listening to the KFC story- if he had given up, I would have to deal with only Mcdonalds! Lookin forward to more episodes :)
