A triumphant return for Cinema Smorgasbord after a week hiatus, and we bring with us both tales of Liam moving his family to a new state, as well as Barry Jenkins’ first feature film: the 2008 romantic-drama Medicine For Melancholy. Starring Wyatt Cenac and Tracey Heggins, the movie traces the aftermath of a one-night-stand as two characters wander San Francisco and discuss relationships, race and gentrification. But is it a forgotten gem? Listen and find out!

BONUS EPISODE: Horror Business – DARK AGE & ROGUE

    Hi all!

Liam is currently moving his family to a new state (with, presumably, the cops hot on his tail), and we planned ineffectively so didn’t have an episode ready this week. Instead, we’ve decided to throw up one of the fine, FINE podcasts available on the Cinepunx Network: Horror Business – also featuring Liam O’Donnell as well as Justin Lore.

If you dig it, be sure to check out more of Horror Business at http://www.cinepunx.com/podcast-episodes/horror-business/ or subscribe on iTunes at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/horror-business/id1078298109.

On this week’s Whatever Happened To Vic Diaz? we look at Vic’s final film: the somewhat controversial Yamashita: The Tiger’s Treasure from 2001! Enjoy the exciting(?) exploits of Jobert and his grandfather as they track down trillions in gold hidden by the Japanese during WWII, while an aged Japanese general (played by Vic Diaz) is hot on their trail. Except it’s much worse than that sounds! Let’s check it out.

Watch Yamashita: The Tiger’s Treasure on Amazon Prime!

It’s PRAISING KANE, and after three episodes we are ready for a film that features more than two minutes of Carol Kane on-screen. Thankfully, William Fruet’s WEDDING IN WHITE delivers a strong lead performance from Kane, who is surrounded by some heavy-hitters (including Donald Pleasence)! While this Canadian drama is somewhat obscure, despite having won Best Feature Film at the 1972 Canadian Film Awards, it’s really well made, affecting and often depressing as hell. We chat about summer movies, look at Steve Buscemi’s ten favorite films and go off on many more trademark tangents. Check it out!

Recognizing that despite the varied lineup of podcasts on the Cinema Smorgasbord network we didn’t have one devoted to a black filmmaker we’ve decided to launch The Films of John Singleton, a short-term podcast project covering the entire filmography of the late director. On our first episode we examine Singleton’s first and last films, starting with the incredible Boyz n The Hood (for which he became the first black director to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars, as well as being the youngest ever nominee) followed by the Taylor Lautner action vehicle Abduction from 2011.
