City of the Rails
When journalist Danelle Morton’s daughter skips town to hop trains, she follows her into the train yard, and across America. Join Danelle as she travels the country to understand what drew her daughter into the hidden world of the railroads. Her guides are the rail cops, train engineers, and hobos she meets along the way, each of them with their own extraordinary tales of the beauty and brutality of the rails. A mother/daughter story unfolds across a landscape of vast open spaces and filthy backstreets, as Morton learns how railroads shaped the modern world - from creating our time zones and QR codes, to the first lobbyists and unions. The story of the rails is the story of America, and through 10 episodes, Morton reckons with our history, and her family history, as she tries what she can to bring her daughter home.

Enjoyed the journey especially from a mothers perspective of processing her daughters choices. Found it made me reflect on my own motherhood and kept me riveted. Enjoyed it immensely even tho it made my heart ache often. Thanks for sharing your story!

This is one of the best podcasts I’ve ever listened to! The author starts by telling the story of her daughter who left home to ride the rails as a hobo but then she does a skillful deep dive, not only into the life of a hobo, but all aspects surrounding it - the railway police, railway workers, the gangs, mafia and the culture. Ruby’s music is amazing! I can’t get it out of my head. She doesn’t just research this from arm’s length, she actually hops the fence and finds out for herself. This is an amazing insight into alternative ways of life. I thought this was all done but we have the second season! Her interview with the guy in jail…It’s explosive, I can’t wait! He probably can’t wait either….

I LOVE the narrators’ voice. She has a soothing and stylish delivery. This story is incredible and I can’t get enough. The ads were insane tho, too many. But that’s the way it is I guess. I want to meet this mom and hang out with her. Can’t wait to see what she does next. Loved the music too.
