Jeremy Best is on staff at Faith St. Thomas and has been a youth pastor for nineteen years.  For the past seven years, he has also been the director of FEB Youth.  Married to Angela, they have two sons and are in the process of pursuing foster-to-adoption for their daughter.

What is Resiliency

• The capacity to recover from difficulties
• Also called toughness or grit
• To bounce back
• We want to train our kids to work through hard times

Helicopter Parenting

• It effects resiliency
• Helicopter parents tend to not let their kids fail or do anything on their own
• Kids need to "own it"

Now vs. Then

• Freedom growing up, but had to check in at some point
• Now we struggle to let our kids have that freedom
• We feel like others are judging us if we let kids go out by themselves

Why Parents Struggle with Kids Failing

• If my kids fails, then I feel like a failure
• We want to protect our kids and partly we want to protect ourselves

3 Tasks of Adolescence

• Identity, Who am I
• Autonomy, how am I unique, different from mom and dad
• Affinity -  where or to whom do I belong
• Give our kids space to work through each of these
• Freedom to go and explore

 For Parents Listening

• Try not to freak out, we want to help coach and guide them
• Most parents genuinely want the best for their kids
• Know that there are other parents going through this, you are not alone
• Support each other

Encouragement for Those Who Serve

• On days when if feels like you are not making a difference, you are, but it may take a long time to show
• Keep loving and serving them!
