Late to the Party...as Usual

I just started listening to this podcast, so yes I'm very far behind everyone who's listened from the start all the way up to the current season (32 I think?). So that being said, this review is based purely on the first season. I really do like this podcast. The research has clearly been done well. I also like the sharing of the narration between Shane and Wendy. The only criticism I have is mostly with Shane's storytelling style – for some reason he reads with strange pauses within every sentence. He pauses at least 2 to 3 times within each sentence, and they're such unnatural places to pause too... I’m not trying to pick on Shane, and Wendy actually does do this too, it's just not as pronounced as Shane's. The cherry on top is that he speaks so slowly that it sometimes feels like he's speaking to school children. I'm not sure why they can't/don't just read their script with a normal conversational tempo and tone...? It's quite aggravating, to be completely honest. If it's still the same in season 2, I'll just skip that season altogether and try one of the most recent seasons. However, I feel the need to qualify that by saying that Shane's speech/reading/narration pattern is so distracting to me, that if the newer episodes are still narrated in that way, I'll have to just say 'one and done', and move on to greener pastures (aka someone who speaks in more of a legato vs a slow staccato manner) If things have changed in their later seasons (and I hope they have), then I'll be happy to come back and adjust my review.

Another review said the host sounds like he is on sedatives. I had to hear for myself. Turns out he is just Southern. Very rude review. ((WMMM hosts would say they’re making fun of farmers!)) But, also… Streisand effect. Anyway, 5/5 from me!

Stories are Interesting, Music is too distracting and takes away from the seriousness of the cases. I feel like Game of Thrones is playing in the background. Less dynamic, softer and repetitive music would be much better. The pacing of the narration is also affected by the music and doesn't feel like as natural a flow as it could be. I don't dislike this podcast, but I don't love it either. I wouldn't subscribe unless it improved.
