Everyone Has Trauma - This is Where You Start with Dr. Aimie Apigian

On this episode of IMPACT, we had a conversation with the wonderful Dr. Aimie Apigian. Dr. Aimie is a Board Certified Preventative Medicine Physician with a Masters in Biochemistry and Public Health. She is also an author, speaker, and founder of Trauma Healing Accelerated, LLC. The topic of discussion for this week is understanding the complexity behind trauma and how to properly address it in order to heal from it.

There are many factors that play into trauma but many of us don’t know what those factors are, let alone what trauma actually is and how it deeply affects us. In this episode, Dr. Aimie dives deep into how she became involved with healing trauma through her own personal experiences and how she has harnessed the pain and turned it into an art and practice that helps many people in their healing journeys.

Of course, we discuss many topics in this episode, but the one statement that Dr. Aimie could not emphasize enough is “less talking, more doing”. Quite frequently, she notices that people tend to stay in the act of expressing their feelings about their trauma and not enough on taking action to diminish it. She asserts that everyone has trauma; everyone in this world is going to endure it at some point. In this episode, she recommends how one should approach their road to emotional wellness and stability. Make sure to have your notepad on hand when you tune in!

    MEMORABLE QUOTES:
“Trauma is anything that, for any reason, at that time, overwhelmed your system. And that’s why it’s so individual. And that’s why it’s also very much related to what is the state of your nervous system.”
    -Dr. Aimie Apigian

“We’ve lumped fight, flight, or freeze all in the same category, and that’s not true. Those are very different physiological states.”
    -Dr. Aimie Apigian

“If we just take that moment to pause and sit, and let whatever comes up, come up, what we would find is that our body would start to shake and tremble because it’s releasing all this adrenaline.”
    -Dr. Aimie Apigian

“Let’s not talk, let’s just do. Where many people get hurt in the process of their healing journey around trauma is talking about it.”
    -Dr. Aimie Apigian

“When we experience trauma, those are very uncomfortable sensations that happen in the body. And so, our nervous system, unconsciously but intentionally, disconnects us from those uncomfortable sensations it sees as a threat to our survival.”

My Privilege is my Resilience and How I Built It... Solo with Meghan Walker

My Privilege is my Resilience and How I Built It... Solo with Meghan Walker

On this week’s episode of IMPACT, there are no guests, it’s just you and me. The topic of discussion for this episode is resilience. I wanted to unpack this very complex term because there are many layers to resilience and I think that it is something that every entrepreneur, every employee, every parent, every kid… everybody should have.

I discuss the factors that lead to substantial and robust resilience, most of which is developed at an early age. When my parents divorced, I flew back and forth between their homes since the age of 11. As if flying wasn’t nerve-wrecking enough, I had to fly by myself and those experiences helped me build a tremendously strong emotional and mental resilience because that ‘goodbye’ hurt every single time. It is the experiences we face when we’re younger that shape us into the people we are today. But we have to address our traumas instead of masking them.

Though some of us have had the privilege of having a home, a nice family, good friends, a full fridge, not everyone has those privileges. It is very important to be aware that people act a certain way based on their life’s circumstances. Empathy is something that we can and should develop in ourselves because not everyone has developed their resilience enough to endure their unfortunate circumstances.

Tune in, share with a friend, and leave a ‘like’ if you enjoyed this episode!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
[3:35] Resilience is not simply the mental health piece
[7:38] Meghan’s own journey dealing with resilience
[12:20] Meghan hated being flown from one parent to another

    MEMORABLE QUOTES:
“Resilience is not simply the mental health piece, it is a spectrum; it’s how we set our physiology and our psychology up for success. And that means we challenge the system.”
    – Meghan Walker

“If your physiology doesn’t have your back, it doesn’t matter how much positive psychology you throw at the table. The system cannot support the event.”
    – Meghan Walker

“Developing resilience is not something we are necessarily born with. We may have a genetic predisposition to not fly off the physiological handle in the face of anxiety and stress. But that is simply a predisposition.”
    – Meghan Walker

“I also know that this pattern of turning and walking forward and being able to move on to the next thing, that was part of my coping mechanism, and it’s part of the coping mechanism that I’ve carried to adulthood.”
    – Meghan Walker

“I acknowledge that I have had access to things in my life that have afforded me a tremendous amount of privilege. But nothing has afforded me more privilege than accessing, experiencing, and witnessing evidence of my own capacity at a young age.”
    – Meghan Walker

“The one thing I can share with you as a clinician, and I think it’s one of the most powerful lessons I took away from the clinical era of my career, is that lots of people, most people, have lots of shit you don’t know about.”
    – Meghan Walker

“My question and call to action to you is: what and where in your life do you need to lean in on that resilience piece… On that physiological resilience… On that psychological resilience? What trauma would you benefit from unpacking?”
    – Meghan Walker

You Are the Medicine with Asha Frost

You Are the Medicine with Asha Frost

On this week’s episode of IMPACT, we had one of the most intuitive conversations yet with the magical, Asha Frost. Asha is an Indigenous (Ojibwe) Medicine Person, mentor, space holder, author and more. Her mission is to have people decolonize their mind and free their spirit from the manacles that have been weighing us down for centuries.

Some of the most impactful ideas from this discussion were how she got introduced to the world of natural medicine and homeopathy; how one shouldn’t care too much about other people’s opinions; how to heal from generational trauma, and much more. Asha emphasizes the idea of decolonizing our brain and spirit, but it’s not only for Indigenous people. She says that all people have been colonized to some extent and now, there is a shift in that aspect.

Asha is truly the modern bridge between the physical world and the spirit world. Her ways of living, ideologies, and ethics have tremendously sparked an inner light in many lives across the globe, including mine. If one wants to take a deeper dive into her journey and receive guidance from a true spiritual master, be sure to pick up her book, You Are The Medicine, available everywhere books are sold.

Tune in to find out more about this beautiful and powerful being.

“So then when 2020 came and everything rose up, it was hard because I’ve been talking about these things for years now and nobody really cared. Why are people caring now?” —Asha Frost

“So when the book opportunity came about, I knew that this was my one opportunity to speak the truth, my truth, my ancestors’ truth, the land’s truth… I wanted to make that impactful, as impactful as I could.” —Asha Frost

“If you’re going to be medicines, can you look at where these are coming from? Can you honor the people? Can you honor the truth of what’s happening in our country?” —Asha Frost

“When we say we love Canada, Canada is a racist country. Are you seeing that? Are you seeing how our Indigenous people are… being treated. Can we see all of those things? It’s just asking for another level of accountability, responsibility, and reciprocity.” —Asha Frost

“I think we’ve all been colonized in different ways. We’ve been disconnected from spirit. Even our bodies, you know? … And that’s one of the main purposes of my book, is reconnection, which seems so simple but we all need it.” —Asha Frost

“ ‘You are the Medicine’, it really comes from my work as a Homeopath I think because I would see folks in front of me and I can see their vital force beaming at me… I could hear or sense the component of their vital force.” —Asha Frost

“I believe that part of the issue is we’re so externally focused, our eyes are all red. I believe that when we could close our eyes and get into that internal space… if I do a shamanic journey, it’s like spirit brings me all the messages.” —Asha Frost

“When you think about how she moves the tides, like we have tides within us and she’s always communicating with us. But we have been colonized to just not reconnect to that. Yet, she is doing it anyways.” —Asha Frost

“It’s really powerful when you lean into this work and turn off your brain, and you just let your being be, the capacity for manifestation in all elements of your life is really powerf

The Real Meaning of FAT and How to Drop It with Natalie Jill

On this week’s episode of IMPACT, we had a very special conversation with Natalie Jill. Natalie is a fat loss expert turned high-performance coach. One can also say she is a supermom. But more than that, she is an amazing philosopher that is turning the clock to a different time when it comes to our mindset. Her mission is to tackle these FAT’s, false assumed truths, and reprogram our minds in order to achieve our highest potential.

In this conversation, we dive into many different topics regarding health and business, but the main idea of discussion was definitely learning how to get rid of these social norms or “truths” that aren’t necessarily our truth, but someone else’s. Natalie emphasizes how one should go about achieving their dream life through the process of deciding what it is they want, envisioning exactly how they want it, and then taking the right actions to achieve it.

More than ever now with social media, people have been programmed to think that we can only do things a certain way and that is not our truth. It may be for them but once one starts to break the barriers they thought existed within them, one then finds out that almost anything is possible. We are creatures of this planet put here to live, experience, and grow, and the possibilities for different outcomes are endless!

“I honestly think that one of the things that creates depression… were boredom in life or comparison problems, is this idea that we have to somehow stay the same.”
    ~Natalie Jill

“You see, so many times, Megan, we stay stuck in circumstances… I’m overweight, I’m broke, I’m getting a divorce… And I had to ask myself, ok, what are the possibilities though? Where could I create?”
    ~Natalie Jill

“When you scroll social media first thing in the morning, you’re in circumstance. Because what runs through your head is ugh, why don’t I look like that? How come I’m not on that trip? Why don’t I have that successful business?”
    ~Natalie Jill

“What I did that day was reprogram myself into what do I actually want and I had to stop my brain from telling me what it is that I don’t want, or what I couldn’t have.”

    ~Natalie Jill

“What a false assumed truth is that it doesn’t mean it’s a fact, it means somebody put that over you. You then found evidence to support it and now that’s what’s going to happen to you.”
    ~Natalie Jill
“I had people bringing me down all the time… I don’t have anyone in my life that doesn’t support my vision, period. And it’s not a me-decision, it’s an intuitive soul decision.”

From Prisoner to Prison Reformer with John Jackson

    BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
On this week’s episode of IMPACT, we had a very special conversation with a guest who is making tremendous changes in the prison rehabilitation space, John Jackson. John was incarcerated for 18 years in prison, so he shares the details that transpired his tumultuous yet inspiring and heart-warming story and how he uses his traumatic experiences to make positive change in the space of prison reform.

Everyone makes poor decisions in their lives but some decisions come at a much higher cost than others and for John, one decision got him wrapped up in the hands of the wrong side of the law. John shares the events that got him sentenced and how the prison system is created to keep offenders at a state of offending by not offering programs to effectively rehabilitate them. But now that is changing with Hustle 2.0, an organization that helps incarcerated adults and youth.

Hustle 2.0 takes a holistic approach to healing and rehabilitating because inappropriate behavior is usually derived from trauma. John has definitely changed my perception of what being a prisoner is actually like and how the prison system is built to keep people going to prison instead of actually helping. John also shares the positive side of being in a gang and how the skills he developed in the gang has helped him be the keen and fearless leader he is today. Tune in to get the full scoop!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:
[5:25] John Jackson’s intro to Hustle 2.0, an organization that helps incarcerated adults and youth in the US
    [7:32] How to know if you’re a natural-born leader
[8:22] John’s horrific experiences that lead him to prison and making poor choices in life
[15:37] There is a good and bad side to prison gangs
[24:42] Where John found a level of courage to walk away from this gang (family) in prison
[29:13] What John’s purpose in this world is
[30:27] What critical changes John wants to make to reform the prison system

    WHERE TO FIND OUR GUEST:

    Hustle 2.0 website

    MEMORABLE QUOTES:
“We take a holistic approach to rehabilitation and healing. We focus on trauma and we like to say that we’re putting lipstick on the pig by making trauma fun, processing trauma fun.”
    ~John Jackson

“What makes me uniquely gifted to do that is my experience of serving 18 years in prison, being a former gang member, and misusing my leadership skills and my ability to help people; I’ve misused those skills for a very long time.”
    ~John Jackson

“I never felt like I belonged to anyone. So when I got to prison, when I got to jail, I became a gang member, I got exactly what I wanted. I got my family that put me first.”
    ~John Jackson

“The indoctrination comes from gang members who say, ‘Come in, we’re going to show you what you’re supposed to do, who you’re supposed to be.’ And it’s very militaristic. So my indoctrination was into a criminal lifestyle.”
    ~John Jackson

“I wasn’t even given access to get my GED until 10 years into my prison sentence; to earn any kind of education. That sets an example of what our prison system can be like here in the United States.”
    ~John Jackson

“Within five years, almost 90% of people who are released from prison go back to prison. That’s where my story is a little unique.”
    ~John Jackson

“I know what my purpose on this earth is and it’s not to die in prison. I believe that God has given me the courage to live out my purpose.”
    ~John Jackson

“Many people know what their purpose is, but knowing what your purpose is and choosing to live it out are two different things.”
    ~John Jackson

“My purpose is to share my story and write curriculum for Hustle 2.0 and inspire people who are incarcerated to see that they can come out through this st

Everything You Need to Know About Long-Haul COVID and other Latent Infections with Dr. Marie Matheson

Everything You Need to Know About Long-Haul COVID and other Latent Infections with Dr. Marie Matheson

Dr. Marie is a Naturopathic Doctor and co-founder of BioHeal Ottawa. One can say that she is a health detective for chronic illnesses and diseases. In this episode, we discuss the dangers of long-haul COVID and other latent infections, and how they can be treated effectively through naturopathic treatments.

Dr. Marie dives deep into the chronic illnesses and diseases that can transpire after having COVID. There are many things one can do in order to reverse and prevent this from happening. These viruses can be detrimental to our immune system, so much so that they can wake up a certain illness one has had years, even decades before. We also discuss the controversial topic of the COVID vaccine and its effectiveness in long-haul COVID.

Overall, Dr. Marie makes it clear that it is immensely important to inform ourselves of studies and cases in order to make responsible decisions for ourselves and our children. No one is safe from these infectious diseases so we take the necessary steps in order to prevent or eradicate these viruses as timely and effectively as we can. In Dr. Marie’s experience dealing with over 800 patients with long-haul COVID, naturopathic medicine and treatments are the way to go!

    KEY TAKEAWAYS:
[9:12] How Marie became involved in the world of infectious disease and chronic illnesses
[10:21] How many patients Marie has treated for long-haul COVID
[11:02] What long-haul COVID actually is
[18:47] Latent viral infections can transpire after SARS-COV-2
[22:53] Long-haul patients were getting recommended to stay at home and get better but that was not happening

    MEMORABLE QUOTES:
“I used my roots, my rooted roots of naturopathic medicine, and treated the individual and not the disease.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“At this point, I have already treated 800 patients, so that’s quite a bit.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson
“Long-haul COVID is persistent symptoms, so to speak, long after these “infections” should have passed. And so these patients persist on with chronic symptoms. The number one chronic symptom would be chronic fatigue.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“Something you had in 1983 could come back and haunt you . So COVID really does cause such an immune dysregulation that it does kick open the doors for these latent viruses that could bring up symptoms that I haven’t had in 20 years.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“Most patients, they were just told that there was nothing to do to help them, and that they should just go home and rest and they’ll eventually get better. That has not been the case.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“30% of patients who have gotten COVID end up getting long-haul COVID as well.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“This is a push to my profession but I really urge all you to seek out a naturopathic doctor to help you if you are sick because there is hope to get you better.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“Could it be that SARS-COV-2 actually gets untreated and then goes into a second phase of this long-haul COVID, of this untreated virus, just like lyme disease?”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“It affects every one of us. So whether you’re vaccinated or unvaccinated, we see these breakthroughs, if you will, infections of SARS-COV-2 in patients that have been vaccinated and you see just as much long-haul COVID in unvaccinated.”
    ~Dr. Marie Matheson

“I’m not convinced that the vaccine can protect you against lo
