Commotion with Elamin Abdelmahmoud

I listened with interest to the following critics on your show this week. These critics were, Harrison Lowman, managing editor of The Hub, writer Rupa Subramanya of The Free Press, and freelance writer Sabrina Maddeaux. Actually I listened a couple of times. While I can agree that sometimes the CBC veers too much into some social justice issues and really boring book reviews, and shows maybe only watched in Quebec or Atlantic Canada I do find that CBC is paying much more attention to providing a reflective role of the color of Canada than it did when it was led by white males of a certain background and age not so long ago. I see women and young men of all ages and colors and I would presume sexual orientations on the tv and radio. Holy moley we even had an Iniut woman doing the National news! I mean like yes! I think this is fantastic because this is what I want to see. I want CBC to be a reflection of the variety of people and their backgrounds in Canada. As I listened to your three critics what I thought I heard creeping through their not well disguised disdain was why is there not more of ‘me’ on the radio, and fill in that ‘me’ with my conservative world views, on everything. Where is ‘my’ programming to hear myself and my concerns? Where is ‘my’ programming to hear about my community values? I don’t think it matters if any of these critics is on any other radio or tv programs espousing their views because this in your world is known as balanced journalism. However balanced journalism is not their goal. I think the real goal is to 1. remove as much funding as possible from the CBC in one slash or do the death by many cuts which is likely preferred and is more painful and funnel funds over to a new national (conservative) radio station so there is unfettered access to Canada’s views, conservative views, because it’s our turn. Or 2. Chop a ton of existing programming and insert their new conservative agenda and hosts. But do everything way way cheaper. After all the infrastructure is already there. I wouldn’t downplay any of the glee with any of these critics and others were this to happen. These three may dislike the CBC for sucking up a billion or so, but if money was suddenly now available they might leap at the opportunity to be hosts on tv and radio that are full of shouty rhetoric. Also remember these programs appear to pull in viewers and alot of advertising money. So let’s watch this space.
