In April of 2020, just a month into the Pandemic, the province of Nova Scotia experienced one of the most traumatic and devastating events in its history. A single gunman Gabriel committed multiple shootings over two days, killing 22 people and set fires at 16 locations.
In this episode Karen Dean shares her experience of losing one of her closest friends in the shooting, and what inspired her write a book titled: “We are Unbreakable: Raw, Real Stories of Resilience”. Collecting authentic and inspiring stories by 22 women from Nova Scotia, Karen provided a forum for these individuals to share their personal reflections from an unprecedented year.
With a message of hope for healing, Karen reminds us that the people of Nova Scotia are resilient people, with a natural inclination to come together as a community. Speaking on her resiliency practice that was further developed following an abusive marriage and past trauma, Karen suggests that we need to speak from the scar, and not from the open wound.
We are dedicating this episode to those who lost their lives in this devastating mass shooting, and the families who continue to pick up the pieces on their healing journey. Our thoughts are with you and want you to know you are not alone.
