    THE BURDEN

    THE BURDEN

In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname.

Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers (who all say they are innocent!) turned jailhouse-lawyers. In prison they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away. They set out to turn the tables on Scarcella while still in prison. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they would succeed.

Thirty years later, more than 20 people Scarcella helped put away have walked free. In the media he’s the “disgraced detective,” the rogue cop who hoodwinked an entire system.

For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast ... where justice is done (and undone).

A calm and considerate portrayal

This podcast is unique in how the stories and research are presented in a straightforward and less dramatic manner. While many similar podcasts often have more than one host and focus on the humorous moments and dramatized reactions, this podcast is what one might call “stripped”. Highly recommended for those who just want the information, and don’t need a whole production/performance with it.

Malice Podcast makes me thankful for human hearing

I was in a conversation about how so many podcasts use the same format. My response was mockingly that music is also plagued by so many genres. If a show is good, I’ll listen to a topic I’ve heard from other podcast artists because the show is good. The logic is cyclical, and it holds. Malice is great. I found them a few months ago but I’m only now reviewing it. There is nothing as good as a well researched, well considered podcast with a good host who cares about the material and the presentation.

The Witch Pod ,

Ariel Cooksey is the bomb.

Excellently prepared and presented podcast digging into horrific human acts from a powerful human/psychological perspective. Keep it coming!
