Precipitous Homebirths and Birth Rights Advocacy

The Renegade Mama

Today on the show I speak with Azure Rigney. Azure’s first daughter Mia was born at 37 weeks in hospital where she had a traumatic experience of her baby being taken away from her, despite her having an APGAR of 9. After this experience and finding out that homebirth was her preferred choice (an option she wasn’t even given or made aware of in her first pregnancy) - she went on to have 2 magical home births which were very fast - just like her first birth. At the time Azure was in the defence force and she consciously used her homebirths as precedent to help change their maternity policy. She now uses her knowledge and experience to lobby the government and other peak bodies to change their policies around maternity care so all choices are included and funded and ultimately to fight for human rights in childbirth. I really admire Azure’s political drive to help everyday women have access to care that they deserve and need - people like her are really needed in this world, so thank you Azure! Azure Bio : Azure Rigney is a Brisbane Mum of 3 who experienced a dramatic journey from maiden to matrescence. She has learned to advocated for herself and her babies in order to set precedent for other women to have access to all choices and autonomy in maternity care within some of the most patriarchal institutions in Australia.
