#106 - Can your body fat percentage dictate your health? - Melina Elliott & Erica Henderson

Do you know your own body fat percentage? What if I told you, something like a skin fold test, could be over 10% off? And what if you could know your bone mineral density? This is why a DEXA scan is so helpful. Melina Elliott and Erica Henderson, the co-founders of Body Measure, started the first business that could offer this information to the public, in Winnipeg. At body measure you can have your DEXA scan, have your metabolic rate tested, and they even team up with a dietician to help give you steps towards improving your health based on that information. And what’s even MORE exciting… they recently started up a new business, called the Menopause Practice, to help women, pre, peri, and post-menopause optimize their health in one of the most difficult periods of their lives, including hormone replacement therapy. We go over all the testing and interventions they offer to optimize your health. In this episode we discuss - How and why they started Body Measure - What can someone learn from a DEXA Scan? - What is the danger of visceral fat? - How Melina used her DEXA to help her lose 100lbs and keep it off - How can a metabolic rate test help someone? - What is the Menopause practice? - What are the misconceptions around hormonal therapy for women? - What are some great results they’ve had already from the new practice? So if you’re into optimizing your health long-term, you will thoroughly enjoy this episode! #105 - How to improve your strength without breaking down! - Dr. J’aime Goguen

105 - How to improve your strength without breaking down! - Dr. J’aime Goguen Are you curious about improving your strength without your body breaking down? Well, imagine what it’s like to work with high-level competitive powerlifters and try to keep their bodies from breaking down. That’s Dr. G’s job for her powerlifting team…And she helps me! Dr. J’aime Goguen is a board-certified doctor of chiropractor and helps work specifically with powerlifting athletes. I came across her Instagram account and noticed how smart her rehab exercise was. So we did a counseling session, and we started to work together using her unique online method of weekly therapy coaching. Each week, I send her videos of the rehab exercises she gets me to do, and the main lifts I want to keep improving while managing my hip and knee pain. She has made a huge impact on me and has a ton of knowledge to offer as she doesn’t just coach you on the therapy but also helps make you better at the main lifting pattern itself to prevent the issue in the long term. We dive into so many great topics around powerlifting and rehab, so you will for sure learn alot. In this episode we discuss - How she got into being a therapist - How she goes into the powerlifting demographic - What makes working with powerlifting athletes so different - What are good tips for the bench press? - What are good tips for the back squat? - What are good tips for the deadlift? - Is sumo cheating compared to conventional? - Where is her powerlifting ambition? If you like lifting heavy stuff, this is a fun conversation to enjoy. #104 - How Much Body Fat and Muscle Mass Have I Gained?

Do you know what a DEXA scan is? Just in case you don’t know, it is a Dual Energy Xray Absorptiometry. So you understand it simply, it is a very low dose X-ray that can determine a ton of data about your body including Body fat % Lean Mass (therefore predicting muscle mass) And bone mineral density And it is currently the gold standard for determining your body fat percentage. I went back to Body Measure, which is a great local business I’ve gone back to for the last few years and I’ve been able to track my progress. I now have 6 different tests to compare and contrast. This last DEXA scan had some really cool information, and I learned a lot from it. So I wanted to do a whole podcast to break down what I found out and what I learned from my last build phase. Because some of the information is really good and exciting! However…there are also some bad truths I have to see too 😛 But I want to be transparent about everything, including taking ownership of where I went wrong in this last build phase. So in this episode, I discuss : Where is my body fat percentage compared to the last 5 tests Why I’m not bothered by having more body fat Why my visceral fat is NOT healthy and why I should be concerned How much muscle I have built How much muscle I was able to build on my arms All the strategies I used to help me grow better My Cookie Monster challenge My upcoming Powerlifting challenge So you know, every lesson I talk about on this podcast is also a lesson you can use. I want to make sure the mistakes I’m making are ones you don’t have to. And so this episode has a lot of value for you to learn from. ___________________________________ Do you know about the Free DIY fitness group? #101 - Advanced Training Techniques Athletes Need To Be Using - Don Moxley

What makes a good strength and conditioning program? Is it just doing hard stuff in the gym so you’re more prepared for the sport? It’s actually quite far from that, and Don Moxley has a TON of data to prove it. Don Moxley is a sports scientist, who helped many athletes achieve incredible success in wrestling, including Olympic medals and many world championships. This is Don’s 2nd appearance on the show, as he was on from Episode 75, and we picked up right where we left off, talking about the details so many people miss when it comes to good strength and conditioning programs. This discussion was even more detailed in its discussion of how someone can appreciate using more data rather than guessing when improving their exercise performance. In this episode we discuss: What got him to be a strength coach How he realized doing LESS gave him more The effect that the speed of a movement has on power development How do athletes address their weaknesses? What do wearables do to help athletes? Why is Zone 4 cardio bad? How to pay attention to overtraining If you would like to nerd out about what’s going on in strength and conditioning for modern-day athletes, this is a great episode for you.
