This week I spoke with Rick Paul as we built Mt. Rushmore's from "Rock" songs. As our conversation unfolded I was reminded again of how definitions seem to come apart as you did into them. For instance, Rick talked about The Tom Hanks film, That Thing You Do. He made the point that during a scene in the movie the band is discussing how to move forward with a song they are working on. The drummer suggests a slight change to the beat. The drummer gives the rest of the band examples of alternating tempos. It's just a one off comment, but it has a lasting effect on the direction the music of the fictitious band takes during the course of the movie.
