Before "PTI" or "First Take" or any of today's popular sports debate programs on TV, there was The Sports Reporters on ESPN. For nearly 30 years, every Sunday morning, top sportswriters exchanged in passionate, intelligent conversation about the major sports issues and personalities today. Now, anchored by Mitch Albom and Mike Lupica - two of The Sports Reporters longest-standing members - the magic of the show is in podcast form, enabling the hosts to continue their highly popular tradition with the benefit of twice-a-week perspectives. In addition to Albom, of the Detroit Free Press, one of the most decorated sportswriters in history, and Lupica, perhaps the country's most recognized and opinionated sports scribe, a third voice will join each program, ranging from former Sports Reporters panelists like Bob Ryan, Bill Rhoden and Christine Brennan, to new and fresh voices in the industry. Join the best conversation in sports every Monday and Thursday.

Generational blind spot

I enjoy the show but sometimes it goes off the rails. I listened to Monday’s show with a little bit of disbelief. These three reporter can’t possibly be unaware that Carl Lewis had numerous failed drug tests that were covered up by both the USOC and US Track and Field? This isn’t even conjecture as Lewis, and the heads of the USOC and it’s testing facilities admitted it years ago. Is it possible that anything to do with PEDs is in a blind spot for reporters of vintage, just like like steroids in baseball which follows approximately the same timeline? Lupica and Albom seemed total oblivious to any of it as they praised Lewis. Ryan stayed out of it, I suspect he knew. Anyway, aside from being way wrong occasionally it’s a pretty good podcast.

Great podcast - Thank you!

I have listened to every Sports Reporters podcast. Yes, all 474 episodes! A great show with wonderful hosts that provide great insights.

I was surprised and disappointed to hear that the episode on Thursday would be the final show. I want to thank Mitch, Mike and Bob for dedicating the time to offer a great show. I will certainly miss listening.

Sis Boom Bah!

Update: Still like the show, but as many others have written, Mike Lupica needs to learn some manners. Do not interrupt people! I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a more impolite person on a podcast. Mike, you may not realize if, but you come across as immature and arrogant. Just listen to yourself. Please.
