Best Basketball Podcast Hands Down

Started listening in 2021 now that’s it’s the off-season and the episodes are slowing down I’ve begun catching up from the first episode back in 2018.
First off can’t believe this started off as a solo-pod, that’s just crazy.
Secondly, it’s unbelievable how timeless all the episodes are, because even if the league events are no longer relevant the basketball ideas are still Gold.

Bravo … For Talking About A Genuine ‘Other League’ Star … Dr. J

‘just stumbled across your podcast, today. I then listened to your Sept. 23/22 edition where you talk about Dr. J. He was my favourite player on one of my two favourite teams back then. In contrasting his huge points per game average during his ABA peak vs. NBA peak, you’re correct in saying the spacing (due to the relative popularity of three point shooting in the ABA) was a large variable. For instance, his teammate on the Nets, Super John Williamson was a prolific and respected three point shooter. You’re also correct in saying that there were many more players on the 76ers who wanted the ball vs. Dr. J’s teammates on the Nets. As you say, George McGinnis, not a very good jump shooter … Dr. J wasn’t either (although, I’d argue the early 80’s version of Dr. J was a better perimeter shooter than the late 70’s version), commanded the same spacing on the floor as Dr. J. Their duality basically cut into each other’s efficiency. If I remember correctly, George was traded for Bobby Jones, who was more of a connector piece or finisher on offence than George was. I suspect, too, and as you say in this episode, the good Doctor’s knees started to betray him in the late 70’s. ‘To circle back to when George and Doc were sharing the same floor space, I’ll always remember the remember the cover on one of the sports magazine back stating something like ‘STAR WARS’ in talking about Dr. J, George, Doug Collins, and even Steve Mix (he of the famous bank shot) all playing on the same team, who, if they were on separate teams (like Dr. J with the Nets in the mid-70’s) would’ve been far and away the # 1 ‘Go to’ guy. One of the sorrier episodes of Dr. J’s career in the NBA was the amazing job that Bobby Gross did on him in defending against Erving in the NBA Finals in ’78 (or was it ’77). Gross was very unheralded and frankly so was the rest of this Jack Ramsey coached team (except for the ‘Mountain Man’ Bill Walton) but he smothered Julius for most of that series. I’m not sure the 76er’s had the greatest coach back then in Gene Shue.
