In the aftermath of World War Two, security was a top priority for many Western nations. Fascism in Europe had been vanquished, but Soviet expansion now represented the latest threat to Western democracy. And so the founding members of NATO decided that the best way to avoid a catastrophic conflict with Russia was to bind themselves together with an ironclad military alliance.
To mark its 75th anniversary, we're telling the story of that alliance. For this, we're joined by Peter Apps, a journalist, British Army reservist and author of 'Deterring Armageddon'. He explains how this organisation has survived, from the end of the Second World War all the way up to the present day.
Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.
