Episode 6 - Exploring better advocacy for school aged students who are immigrants and refugees

(Author: Rita Rhoda Stroud ) Hello to all of you listening or reading the podcast “We are the Future”. I am Rita Rhoda Stroud and in this episode I will be discussing an important issue in today’s global world: how to advocate for school-aged immigrant and refugee children. Imagine you are a child (18 years old or under) that had to leave your home alone or with your family. As an immigrant, you would move to a new country simply to be close to family, or due to economic factors. As a refugee, however, you would flee to another country in fear because of famine, war, poverty, natural disaster, or gang violence. How would you feel in this new country with a different language, different customs, and people who look different than you? Even worse, how would you feel if you stayed in a refugee camp, with no schools or hospitals and no hope for you to ever go back to your home? Would you take pride in your heritage, or would you hide it? Would you feel grateful that you are safe in this new country, or would you be scared of being deported? Would you be able to make friends or stay as an outsider feeling you would never fit it? Children of immigrants and refugees face these problems as they walk through their lives in an unknown country. #WeAreTheFuture #TakeActionProject

Episode 5 - Black LGBTQIA pioneers who championed equality in America

Episode 4 - Black Americans who are descendants of American chattel slaves struggle to be fully American

(Author: Nara Valerie Goode ) Statistics show that it is unlikely (or it won't happen) that Black Americans will have equal rights (aka the same rights) compared to white people. Surveys have been taken and 78% of Black people think that the country isn’t doing enough for them to have equal rights. According to opinion polls during this last presidency, it has been more common for people to share racially insensitive views. Episode 3 - Creating spaces for Americans on the spectrum and exploring the diversity of the Autism spectrum

(Author: Tilda Tara Campbell ) Hi my name is Tilda Tara Campbell and this is WE ARE THE FUTURE. Today my topic is creating space for Americans on the autism spectrum. To further gather information about Autism Spectrum Disorder, I was fortunate enough to have conversations with two mothers willing to share about their sons and their family journeys. Autism is diagnosed in boys four times more often than in girls, so it wasn’t a surprise to be talking to them about their sons. The two boys are on totally different ends of the Autism spectrum. One of them has had more trouble developmentally throughout his life. His mother, Mrs. B, has to stay home to help him. Without the Affordable Care Act, they would have significant financial difficulties in caring for him. Mrs. B always has to watch Doozy, or he would run away from home like he has done many times before. In contrast, Mrs. O’s son has trouble with education at times, but he does not have as much trouble in day-to-day life. #WeAreTheFuture #TakeActionProject

Episode 2 - The struggle for inclusion by indigenous people / tribes in the Philippines

(Author: Dawn Gwen Wakefield) Hello and welcome to another episode of We are the future. I am Dawn Gwen Wakefield here to talk about the struggles for inclusion by indigenous people and tribes in the Philippines. In school, the Filipino kids were discriminated against and called “ipis” which means cockroach just because they were not familiar with modern technology and certain ways of transportation. People from other countries are taking advantage of the Filipino people in politics ,and they threaten the Filipinos with saying they will take away their land and food if they don’t do what they say. Health access and education are also being taken away from the Filipinos. In school, sometimes when they are learning about a specific subject, their indigenous identity is not taken into consideration and it makes it harder for the Filipino kids to learn. Some Filipino people are also discriminated against in their jobs and they only get accepted into work places with bad circumstances and not very good jobs. They are being judged for their jobs not by their talent but by their job category, income, education, gender, and other things that shouldn’t be judged. Some Filipino that have moved to the US, are being discriminated, not with words, but people are just ignoring them completely and either forgetting about them or not even wanting to care about them. #WeAreTheFuture #TakeActionProject

For my Girl Scout troop’s Take Action Project we have chosen to make a podcast that discusses under-represented communities, such as LGBTQ youths and adults. Please also check out my fellow troop members’ podcast episode on other underrepresented communities. Hopefully our community, city, state, country, and eventually world can grow to realize we are all equal. I will be talking about how LGBTQIA youth are underrepresented in schools. #WeAreTheFuture #TakeActionProject

This podcast was created by the GS troop - TPH Unicorns. This limited podcast series serves as a "Take Action Project" for the Cadettes as they finish their Media journey. We are using media "for good". We are demonstrating that we can positively use media to bring about awareness to underserved and marginalized communities, both nation wide and globally. It is our hope that this podcasts spreads awareness about marginalized communities and their challenges. We want to demonstrate that media truly can be used for good to help our national and global community. Many thanks to the parents and our supporters for helping us with this project.
