    Our guest was known as "The Magic Man". Jimmy Miller was a standout player for the University of Virginia Basketball team from 1981 to 1985. Jimmy was instrumental in leading the Cavaliers to the Sweet 16, Elite 8, and the 1984 Final Four, where he was named MVP of the Eastern Regional. Despite being heavily recruited by Duke, Jimmy chose UVA, where he played 132 games and became a beloved figure in college basketball. He was heavily recruited by Princeton and West Virginia before becoming a UVA legend. He tells Stock and Hicksy what he believes is the greatest play in UVA Basketball history. Jimmy also tells us about founding his financial firm and how it has become a boutique financial firm with clients from all over the country. Finally, you will hear about his passion, magic, and especially storytelling through magic. Stock recalls Jimmy doing the greatest magic trick he has ever seen.     Our 50th Episode: Stock and Hicksy Talk about Themselves and It's Actually Interesting!

    This is a huge moment for Stock and Hicksy: It is their 50th Podcast! They can't believe it, but it is a milestone they are proud of and also quite grateful to their guests and listeners. Hicksy recites some of their impressive metrics (48 guests, 9,622 downloads, 224 Spotify followers), but that is not what makes him and Stock happy about this accomplishment: It is the mix of guests from golf pros to a priest to authors to military and many more. It has been a great adventure interviewing all these folks and sharing their stories with our listeners. Their friend, Greg Wells, plays host and asks a wonderful variety of questions. You will hear about Stock and Hicksy's childhood, their influences, their worst jobs (Tom almost destroyed a diesel truck and Stock was burying electrical lines deep in the forest), their college experiences and studies, the moment they met their future wife, their motivations, their happy places and even their pet peeves (Hicksy hates it when people do this in a grocery store parking lot and Stock doesn't like it when people behave a certain way). Hicksy’s got a new job, and they also return with a powerful conversation featuring a guest whose organization is making a real difference in the lives of children across Central Virginia. "Our goal is to provide a consistent approach to supporting families, says Jacki Bryant, Executive Director of Ready Kids, a Charlottesville nonprofit serving children and families for over 100 years. Originally founded as an orphanage, Ready Kids now focuses on counseling, family support, and early childhood education. Jacki tells how the organization has developed to meet today’s challenges, such as those brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, increased mental health needs, and family stress. She discusses with Stock and Hicksy the critical role of early intervention and the continuing need for community support and sustainable funding. Jacki also focuses on the importance of caring for frontline staff, as they support some of the community’s most vulnerable children. She tells of a real-life success story of two girls who came from an abusive family. Additionally, she also reveals the shocking issue with children's brains today. Ready Kids provides therapy and other services to children and their families at no cost.     William Washington's story is one of redemption, second chances, and the power of faith. Coming from a troubled home and battling drug addiction, he found himself serving a long-term sentence in the Charlottesville Regional Jail. But thanks to a compassionate judge and two Christian men who believed in him, his life took a dramatic turn. "I was looking for just one day of peace within," William tells Stock and Hicksy. "Jail put me in a place of processing my life the correct way." After his conversion to Christianity, he opened his home to homeless individuals and struggling families in his neighborhood. He even took on the challenge of remodeling a home in a drug-infested area, saying, "The more I gave, the more I was empowered." But everything changed after a meeting with Judge Jay Sweatt. That conversation set him on a path to create The Bridge Ministry in Buckingham County, Virginia—a place where formerly incarcerated men can break free from addiction and criminal behavior. At the ministry’s 17.3-acre facility, they gain valuable trade skills and rebuild their lives as positive members of society. Joining William in this episode is his son-in-law, Jay James, a key leader at The Bridge Ministry. Together, they share how this transformative program is restoring lives and offering hope to men that many had given up on. Stock puts it best: William Washington leads a very noble life.     Stock and Hicksy have interviewed many guests who are stellar in their fields, but they can rarely say they have interviewed the GOAT (Greatest of All Time). But, Connor Shellenberger certainly qualifies. Connor is a four-time All-American at UVA Lacrosse. He holds many records and led them to the national lacrosse championship in 2021. And while he has set the standard in the sport, he doesn't take credit for his success. "It started with my parents," he says modestly. "Their work ethic inspired me to go all in for lacrosse." The Charlottesville, VA. native spent his junior year at The Bullis School, in Potomac, MD. "I needed the experience." Then graduated from St. Anne's Belfield (STAB). However, the critical decision he made during his first year at UVA changed his life for the better. Connor was selected second overall by the New York Atlas in the 2024 PLL College Draft and has loved being a professional. Yet, it's the lacrosse clinics that he holds for kids during the off-season that bring him the most fulfillment. He also stuns Stock and Hicksy when he explains why he has accomplished so much in his lacrosse career. He is known to be unselfish, and his answer proves it. Throughout the conversation, Connor's humility and team-first mentality shine through, offering listeners valuable insights into the mindset of a true champion.     You have probably seen our guest's work before in such films as Minority Report (2002), Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), and X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). Larry Blanford, who always loved movies, learned to help tell a story with film in the U.S. Air Force. "I didn't want to be in a boat. I wanted to travel, so the Air Force was it for me." He tells us he had never even been on a plane when he joined. Larry excels at taking on new challenges. While in the Air Force, he was hired to be an in flight cameraman for the mega-hit Top Gun (1986). He did so well that the director asked him to work on more movie projects. So, nine months later, Larry quit the Air Force and became a full-time Hollywood movie photographer. For Larry cinematography came naturally, "like a duck to water," and he has been able to follow his passion ever since. The Richmond, Indiana native also talks about working with famous actors such as Samuel Jackson and explains what the three most difficult jobs are on a movie set.     "I like fixing stuff with my hands so medicine just seemed logical," says our guest, renowned melanoma cancer surgeon and researcher, ⁠Dr. Craig Slingluff⁠. "The operating room was a cool place to be for me," he continues. It's a good thing he did, as Dr. Slingluff has been leading the way for over thirty years in both ⁠cancer surgery and research⁠. Patients with cancerous melanoma average age is 50. So, those under that age tend to be healthy making the prognosis for curing it high. "It's hard to pinpoint the causes, " Dr. Slingluff says. There are so many reasons for the large increase of melanoma patients in the US including a surprising one for people with certain physical characteristics. He tells Stock and Hicksy about the two common melanomas including one that baffles oncologists and researchers. The melanoma cancer vaccine research is promising as the study focuses on the immune system. Personalized vaccines are an exciting new area of research in which Dr. Slingluff is leading the way. What’s behind the rise in melanoma cases? Can personalized vaccines change the future of treatment?
