    What about Me!?

    What about Me!?

Have you ever felt a little disappointed when, at the end of the year, the teachers in your studio receive praise and armfuls of gifts from students but you, as the studio owner, end up empty handed? Life as a studio owner can certainly be thankless at times and that’s often because the majority of work we’re doing is behind the scenes - think admin, logistics, training teachers, running a business! In this week’s episode of At The Barre we’re unpacking some simple strategies for dealing with those times when you feel unacknowledged in your studio. I offer advice and a few handy tools you can use to understand why you might be feeling unloved and how you can subtly shift your mindset to become more ‘at peace’ with a perceived lack of acknowledgement from your customers.

    The Magic of Self Awareness

    The Magic of Self Awareness

In today’s episode of At The Barre we’re taking a deep dive into self awareness and how it can impact the type of leader you are in your studio. As a dance studio owner, you know there is always something to do in your studio and sometimes it’s the work on our ‘self’ that gets pushed aside as we deal with more ‘urgent’ matters. But, in this episode, we discuss why prioritising this work is so important and how it truly effects every aspect of your studio. We also touch on what a lack of self awareness can mean for your studio and I even reveal a few tools you can use to start to looking deeper to find what truly makes you tick. Looking for more about this valuable aspect of self development? Don’t forget about my upcoming Summer School ‘23. Visit my socials for more information about the event and how you can be part of the fun this January.

    The Art of Business

    The Art of Business

Repeat after me… “proft is not a dirty word”.

In this episode of At The Barre we’re talking all things money with studio owner Kaitlin Hague. As a studio owner, it can be difficult to reconcile your ‘calling’ as a teacher and mentor with the financial reward that SHOULD come with running a successful business. On the daily, we can be faced with parents who wonder why they’re being charged an ‘admin fee’ on top of the costume or competition entry and even employees who might not fully ‘get’ the actual cost of running a studio.

This isn’t just a conversation about numbers though and certainly not one just for studios of a certain size. We also talk mindset and how we can start changing our own relationship with money.

    Contemporary, Community and Change

    Contemporary, Community and Change

‘Community’ is a word we often hear associated with dance studios especially when it comes to values. In fact it’s become a bit of a buzz word. But have you ever really dug deep about what it actually means in relation to your studio? Today I’m joined At The Barre by Holly Diggle who runs Dance Northside - a community-focused studio in the ACT. We talk about how she infuses every touchpoint in her studio with her values of kindness, community & respect and how she nurtures her studio community beyond student-focused events. We also touch on navigating ambition whilst still maintaining balance and why walking faster isn’t getting you there any quicker.

    Get on board

    Get on board

Does your studio have an onboarding system for new staff members? Do you have a process for welcoming new team members or do they just show up and start teaching? In this week’s episode of At The Barre we’re talking about why a thorough staff onboarding process is so vital to the success of your studio - and to a positive experience for your teachers, admin team and even you as the studio owner. Recruiting new team members can be a time-consuming and expensive process so it makes sense to ensure your new hires are set up for success. I share how you can help your staff feel like valued team members from the very start and why we can look to some of the world’s biggest fast food chains for inspiration.

Who do you think you are?

Who do you think you are?

Prepare yourself for some soul searching because in this episode, we’re going deep (well as deep as we can in 35 minutes anyway). Today I’m joined At The Barre by Melanie Gard to talk about imposter syndrome, being the ‘good girl’ and managing ambition. We touch on how attaching words to your feelings can sometimes help put things in perspective and why the movie Babe has gifted us with one of the best affirmations we could ever imagine. And for some light relief, listen out for a couple of bonus life hacks! You're welcome 😉
