    23. Gut Health & Mental Health w/ Integrative Nutritionist, MS, CS, RD, Miriam Jacobson

    23. Gut Health & Mental Health w/ Integrative Nutritionist, MS, CS, RD, Miriam Jacobson

    Ooooo, very-special-episode-alert!

Today’s guest expert human is Miriam Jacobson (She/Her), an integrative nutritionist who uses functional medicine to help people resolve underlying reasons for their 'mystery symptoms' like indigestion, bloating, bowel abnormalities, fatigue, low energy levels and irritability.

[Don’t know what “integrative nutritionist” or “functional medicine” mean? Don’t worry, neither did I…we cover it in this episode!]

She's smart, dedicated (aka 2 degrees! 3 certifications!) and easy to talk to (has a v. California millennial sound) and SO helpful.

Across a mildly-decent-internet connection, we cover: why gut health affects our mental health, alien invaders in our digestive system, probiotics vs prebiotics, accidentally suggestive 90’s kids toys called “water snakes,” the dirty dozen and clean 15, science’s verdict on food trends like cutting calories, juicing, and gluten-free everything; the best diets for people prone to depression or anxiety, are carbs bad??, WTF is keto?, and every rapid fire question y’all could think of.

Here's that special link for Miriam's Food Foundations online course!

    21. Having a lowkey existential crisis? Here's why & what to do about it.

    21. Having a lowkey existential crisis? Here's why & what to do about it.

Is mercury in gatorade? Why did I seriously consider learning that viral (omg pun inception) coronavirus dance on TikTok? Why am I so irritable? Why am I reevaluating every single one of my life choices right now?

It’s not you, it’s your brain on stress—and a very special kind of socially-triggered stress.

In this 15 min voicemail, I breakdown the science behind:

    >> Why you’re suddenly itching for change, irritated, and questioning all your life / career choices

    >> What’s happening in your brain and how it’s tied to the 24/7 negative news cycle

    >> What to do if you’re melting down inside or overwhelmed (but trying to play it cool)

    >> Examples of healthy + unhealthy ways of handling this stress (hey thx psychology research!)

While I wait for you to have a long enough work break to listen to this thing, tell me flavor of life meltdown you’re having this week’s—either leave me a voicemail at 510) 394-2104—or drop me a DM/comment on Instagram @alexisrockley.

[P.S. My meltdown included hating my closet, fantasizing about relocating, beating myself up over productivity, and falling asleep at 7:30pm two nights this week. Nobody's perfect, but we're in this together!]

So…Call me when you get this?

You don't need more generic, good vibe-y (but totally un-researched) advice from self-proclaimed "experts" telling you to "pursue your passion," "learn to prioritize," or "practice self-care." You're not lazy, distracted, or lost. You just need help getting out of your own way.

You need goal-setting strategies rooted in psychology, accountability, and aggressive cheerleading.

    20. Don't make the mistake of setting goals in THIS mental state (PLUS: 3 steps to bouncing back from a creative block + sh*tty mood)

Woooah boy, did I have a Britney-circa-2007 kind of meltdown this week! When my mild creative block became a dark + twisty mood and then spiraled into intense self-loathing, I did a few things right to get out of that mess—and a few things wrong, too.

And now? I'm going to save you from making those mistakes...and the depths of the self-loathing pit.

In this episode, I walk you through 3 easy steps to bouncing back from creative block, PLUS breakdown why we should NEVER try to set goals in one particular set of circumstances and mindset—no matter what time of year it is. [Honestly, can everyone stop reminding us that we're about to kick off a new decade? I'm sweating under the pressure.]

Oh, also—coffee, Brian McKnight lays down the rules, and almost shattering my phone almost shatters your eardrum. My bad.

    19. Nothing to sell—just an "I love you"

    19. Nothing to sell—just an "I love you"

Not sure when you'll get this, but...it's a holiday week in the U.S. and we're about to be bombarded with marketing emails, gimmicky commercials, and pitch-heavy people telling us time is running out to buy, buy, buy.

I have none of that to say.

No Black Friday deals, no ticking clock promos, no special discounts, no sales pitch: just a love note.

If you have 2:42 seconds to spare and could use some sunshine in your earholes, this voicemail is for you.

TL;DR: I F***ING LOVE YOU AND DON'T YOU FORGET IT

So…Call me when you get this?

No really, call me! 510) 394-2104.

Leave a voicemail with your love notes, feedback, and questions for me to research, and I’ll be sure to call you back.

    18. Feeling Stuck? Change the subject for your brain.

    18. Feeling Stuck? Change the subject for your brain.

    Hi! Two things:

    1) You know what Tuesday needs? A pep talk. Mondays are rough, sure—but we've psyched ourselves up for it. Tuesdays, however, sneak right up and smack you in the face with their Tuesday-ness. Everyone could use a Tuesday pick-me-up, and since I can't come to your place of work and bring you an actual coffee, I figured I could leave you a quick voicemail instead. So if you aren't subscribed, jump on it—cuz I know you could use the sunshine in your ear-holes, and especially on Tuesdays.

    2) You know what your brain needs? A change of subject. Especially if you're feeling stuck. Listen in (it's only 7 min) to find out why changing your scenery and focus can mean the difference between getting shit done and smacking your head against your computer keyboard.

So…Call me when you get this?

No really, call me! 510) 394-2104.

Leave a voicemail with your love notes, feedback, and questions for me to research, and I’ll be sure to call you back.
