Three students realize that food is more than just a physical necessity... It is a site of complex political and social processes as well.

    01: An Olive Journey

    01: An Olive Journey

Sam, Alyssa, and Alan are students at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Upon examining labels on their food out of curiosity, it occurred to them that olive oil was produced in more places than Europe which they previously believed. This realization inspired a quest to learn about the significance of olive oil in countries that are not often talked about in mainstream Canadian media. An Olive Journey is the summation of their exploration into the world of olive oil in the East and South Mediterranean, otherwise known as the Middle East and North Africa.

Their vision for this podcast is to inspire mindfulness and dialogue about the hands and land that make contact with our food. In this episode, they will describe the diversity of olive oil tastes and uses, olive oil as a cultural keystone in Palestine, and how the confluence of olive oil and the export market is tied to Tunisian identity.

As well, they will share excerpts from an interview they conducted with Sobhi Al-Zobaidi, the co-owner of Palestinian restaurant Tamam in Vancouver. Check it out here: https://www.tamam.ca/

Join them in answering the question, what stories are woven into our food?
