Inside a Jim Crow asylum
In March 1911, twelve Black men were brought to a forest in Maryland. Under supervision, they cleared land and laid foundations for what would become the Crownsville Hospital, a segregated mental asylum for black patients. These twelve men would also become the hospital's first patients. Speaking to Elinor Evans, journalist and author Antonia Hylton shares the story of one of the last segregated asylums in the United States of America, and what it can tell us about the nation's history of racial integration and civil rights.

Being German-English and thus part of me in the past permanently irritated with ‚Hogan’s Heroes’ and ‚Colditz’ TV programmes in the sixties and seventies, Ben Macintyre deserves a lot of praise for presenting a realistic and lively, balanced contribution towards better understanding! I am convinced that the old way of presenting Germans in such series did so much harm because the average person allowed certain pictures to anchor in their brains which later on, without reflection - have negatively influenced our German-English relationships to a great extent until this very day.
