In June of 1990, Nelson Mandela, said “Education is the most powerful weapon that we have to change this world.” And, he said it to the students and teachers of Madison Park High School in Roxbury. Thirty years later, how well have we used education as a weapon against institutional racism?

One week after the death of George Floyd was recorded and posted on social media by a passerby in Minneapolis, protests continue to erupt around the globe, demanding change on a scale not seen since 1968.  This was not the first time a black man died while restrained by a white police officer as he cried out for help and was ignored, but while in the midst of a deadly pandemic, an associated economic slide,  the fanning of political flames rooted in deep political division,  Americans, black, white and brown, have had enough, and the time for change has arrived. 

For K-12 teachers, trying to end one of the worst school years in generations remotely from a laptop camera on a positive note is now going to be impossible. So, how do we make this a teachable moment? That's our topic tonight. We hope you'll join us.
