Victimization, Villainization, & Cancel Culture with Ori Zimmels and Genevieve Pleasure

Victimization, Villainization, & Cancel Culture with Ori Zimmels and Genevieve Pleasure

In the last few years, our society has seen the rise of cancel culture. And while that’s not news to anyone, both Ori and I have found ourselves on the receiving end of a “canceling,” leading to experiences that were both painful and traumatizing.
But this harmful effect extends much farther just Ori and I, so today on the podcast, we’re digging into this whole phenomenon and how it ends up damaging everyone in its wake. We’re talking about the power dynamics at play for people with a public profile, the wide range of human experience and how cancel culture oversimplifies that experience, and how cancel culture ultimately drives us all apart.
We’ll also touch on the pervasive fear that cancel culture perpetuates – and how we can overcome these fears, reconnect, and move toward more mature, effective relationships.
This episode is so juicy! Let’s dive in!
    What’s in this episode:
    [00:00] Intro
[04:02] The relationship dynamics of being in a power position, and how that role is often of of service
[08:03] The crux of the problem with cancel culture
[15:20] The many multitudes contained in humanity and how only singular aspects are often expressed publicly
[18:45] The trauma that comes with the experience of being canceled
[24:10] How cancel culture is often counterproductive and causes us to close off from each other
[27:15] How others project their own fears and insecurities on those in power positions
[32:48] The fear that accompanies cancel culture and how we can move away from this harmful framework of relating to each other

The Pain and Pleasure of Sexuality with Cadell Last and Genevieve Pleasure

The Pain and Pleasure of Sexuality with Cadell Last and Genevieve Pleasure

The relationship between pain and pleasure is quite complicated. Too much of one or the other isn’t necessarily a good thing. But before any pleasure can happen, there has to be safety, which is the first step of my framework of authentic human expression. Feeling unsafe leads to the inability to feel pleasure.
If you’ve ever been stuck between pain and pleasure, keep listening.
Today I’m chatting with Cadell Last, the founder and creator of Philosophy Portal and author of Global Brain Singularity. Cadell and I catch up again after 4 years and we discuss sexuality and the human condition, the safety vs. adventure drive as it relates to pleasure, and how the relationship between pain and pleasure is very complicated.
Remember that there’s a duality in everything - life and death, pain and pleasure, safety and adventure, mundanity and ecstasy. It’s the true human condition to experience all sides to life and sexuality.
    What’s in this episode:
Is the ground of the human condition really sexuality? And how death and unity play into it all
Choosing simplicity and the positives of absence and lack
My framework of authentic human expression and how it relates to the safety vs. adventure drive
In order to create a sustainable community, you have to self-regulate first before co-regulation can happen
Our culture as a whole thinks of sex as a way to escape discomfort, but we should actually sit with the discomfort instead
The relationship between pain and pleasure is complicated

Pleasure and Its Misconceptions with Ori Zimmels and Genevieve Pleasure

Pleasure and Its Misconceptions with Ori Zimmels and Genevieve Pleasure

There are a lot of misconceptions around what pleasure actually is. Our society leads us to believe that pleasure can only be sexual in nature and that it is very transactional in terms of giving and receiving pleasure. But pleasure is so much more free and mysterious and life-giving than that.
If you’ve ever felt frustrated in your pursuit of pleasure, this is the conversation for you.
Today I’m chatting with Ori Zimmels from Life Awake. Ori offers spiritual guidance and mentoring to help his clients get out of their heads and into their bodies to experience connection and authenticity. We discuss what pleasure is, why the societal definition is so limiting, why we have to surrender in order to experience true pleasure, and why we should let go of our preconceived notions of what pleasure is and how to achieve it.
Let your mind and body be open to pleasure. Experience the mystery of pleasure. Let it blossom in your life and be surprised by it. Reframing your mindset around pleasure will change your life.
    What’s in this episode:
Pleasure is something we share from ourselves, not something we give or receive to others, and it’s more than just sexual pleasure
The objectification and narrowing of pleasure is a big problem in our society
Real, embodied pleasure is nourishing and life-giving and also a mystery
When we have a preconceived notion of pleasure, we miss out on the journey of joy and life itself
Surrender plays a big role in pleasure and it’s important to learn to let go
True pleasure mimics the order of nature

    Sex Work with Sinnamon Love

    Sex Work with Sinnamon Love

Shame and stigma around sex work and sex workers has always been prevalent in society. Sex workers are treated as second class citizens, often unable to secure a bank acount or housing simply because of their profession. In today’s episode, I’m chatting with Sinnamon Love, a veteran sex worker, who is a fierce advocate for sex workers’ rights, particularly within the BIPOC, queer, and trans communities. She is also the founder of The BIPOC Adult Industry Collective, a human rights organization whose goal is to provide sex workers of color with financial and community support.
Sex workers are largely to thank for the fact that society is becoming more sex positive. Sex workers affirm that you can be a good person and a sexual being; the two are not mutually exclusive. I’m so excited to share this episode with y’all, and to get the conversation moving forward on how and why it’s important to remove the shame and stigma from sex work, as well as from our inherent existence as sexual beings.

    What’s in this episode:
How sex work has opened doors for Sinnamon
The lack of protection for sex workeres
Why sex workers deserve to be treated as entrepreneurs
The difficulty that sex workers face with lack of access to financial services
Why sex work needs to be decriminilazied and sex workers should be a protected class
How sex work and sex workers are healing for society
Debunking misinformation around sex in a society that makes it seem shameful
The importance of community and trained professionals to having a healthy relationship with sex
How COVID affected sex workers and shed more light on inequalities

Words that Move with Max S.

Words that Move with Max S.

Words are a powerful form of expression. How do we let creativity flow in a way that is authentic and truthful? It’s not about the words themselves, but rather where they’re pointing. In this episode, I’m talking to Max S., poet, filmmaker, and speaker, who understands how to make words flow in a way that moves people. I found such power and desire and truth in his poem about porn, titled A Wild Vessel, and knew I had to have him on the show. Max shares his creative process, his journey with sexuality and eroticism through the influence of porn in his youth, and how he learned to reclaim his sexuality and physical intimacy in adulthood.

    What’s in this episode:
How poetry (both what it is and is not) influenced Max’s work
The importance of removing the ego from creativity
His porn poem, A Wild Vessel
How going with the flow can take your original idea to new and unexpected heights
How to not limit your creativity to what you think it wants to be
The energetic synchronicities between love, art, and god
Why community is important to championing one’s truth
Advice on how to fully accept yourself (hint: live your truth!)
