    Finding Your Joy (Mental Note)

Have you ever wondered why the person you want to have a relationship with isn’t ready, or doesn’t seem to be on the same page as you?  We want other people to be ready to make changes at the same time that we are ready.  But that is rarely the case, and we can’t make someone else ready for change.     We have to ask the hard question of, are we making someone else a priority over ourselves.  Because we have our own traumas, our own experiences, and our own things that we have to work through and we have to work through those and find joy for ourselves.  We can’t expect other people to fill that void and we can’t expect others to be seeking out the same things at the same time as us.   Finding joy should be a priority, and if someone or something is distracting from that, we have to examine why we are allowing that person or thing to distract us from the joy we deserve.     --   Topics Discussed:   Are we ready for the relationship we are in? Pursuing Your Dreams (Mental Note)

We are coming to you today to talk about pursuing your dreams. I have been talking to a variety of people over the last couple of weeks and have heard a common theme. They are in a career but do not feel like they are pursuing their passion. Have you ever felt that way? You deeply want to pursue a certain path but feel like you have invested so much time in something else? I want to challenge you today to take a look at your life and be honest with yourself, what is truly your passion? What would you choose to do as a career if there were no barriers? In this episode, I share with you a simple practice that will help you take small steps to make your dream a reality.  Life's too short to work our entire lives and be unhappy. Even if you are just pursuing your passion as a hobby, you might be surprised how implementing just a little of what you love into your day can help your mental health and even slowly move you towards a career you are in love with.  -- Topics Discussed: Rediscovering your passion A simple exercise that will help you write out your vision Encouragement to go the unbeaten path -- Connect with us! Do you sometimes feel ashamed when talking about your own mental health? Do you worry what other people will think and does this fear keep you back sometimes from pursuing the support that you need? I also hope it encourages you to see mental health as a part of your overall health and that it is okay to talk to someone. There are so many options available for therapy. Sickness While Single (Mental Note)

Being sick is never any fun, it’s miserable.  When you add onto being sick the fact of being single and not having anyone there to help take care of you it can be even harder to get through.  It’s important to realize that when we feel sick we will feel down mentally, and that’s a normal thing.   During those times it’s very important for us to reach out for help. Reaching out for help is not a sign of weakness and often it can be extremely important not just for our physical health, but our mental health as well.  In addition when we are sick we don’t know if things may take a turn for the worse, and if they do it is crucial we have someone available that we have reached out to who knows what we are going through. Talking through or writing down your mental thoughts during this time can be especially beneficial as it helps us process through the loneliness and emotions that we go through during these times. -- Topics Discussed: Reaching out for help. Traits of Highly Sensitive Person (Mental Note)

We are coming to you today to talk about a character trait called “Highly Sensitive Person” (or HSP). The word “sensitive” is not negative, it simply means someone who is highly attuned. It means that your emotions run deep. The other part of HSP is that the person’s body (or nervous system) becomes a little more attuned as well-meaning you become sensitive to your surroundings, like fabrics or the light or temperature in a room. I wanted to give this brief explanation because this personality is more prevalent than you may think, and is common within the black community. So if you feel misunderstood sometimes, or feel like there is something wrong with you, I wanted to take the time to assure you that you are not.  As a fellow HSP and a trained clinician trained specifically in Highly Sensitive People, I can help you navigate through the unique way you move through the world. I understand that it can feel like you are a square peg in a round hole- but the personality you have is okay. Aligning Your Work with Who You Are with Ashley Ashire

How do you position yourself as an expert in your work? Imposter syndrome can catch hold of us and keep us second-guessing whether we have the knowledge and skills for the job we are in or are trying to get into. In today’s episode, I sit down with Ashley Asshire who empowers women towards taking meaningful action in life and career.  She sits down and talks about how to leverage our imposter syndrome to our advantage. She explains that when we experience those self-doubts, they are actually red flags for us to take a step back and evaluate whether we are at the right place that aligns with our skillset. She encourages us to evaluate our environment and not just go with the flow or do things the way we’ve always done them.  Ashley talks about how we need to breathe life into our work and what we are skilled at accomplishing.  -- Topics Discussed: How to evaluate whether we are in the right job.
