9 episodes

A podcast born from temporarily not being able to see the things we might want to. Marie, Henry and George sometimes spend time wandering around looking at things. Wandering is in short supply, so we thought we'd talk about looking at things instead. In each episode, we take something we're interested in- a painting, image, sculpture or building etc, and we talk about it. We can't promise anything, and we certainly can't promise expertise.

Recess over. We're back and it's Marie ft. Marino Marini; it had to be. Get a gander over here (Marie's choice is called 'Danzatrice'; she's in the 50's section.

    20th century sculpture Pt.II

We've left France for Venice. Henry describes this sculpture from memory, and we denied ourselves the chance to look at while he constructed an image for us. You might have seen it, you might not have, but feel free to play along.

Here's a link to the image for when you're ready.

    The Man Who Walks

    The Man Who Walks

A new triptych today; 20th century sculpture. We're back in (do we ever want to leave?!) the south of France. As our friend Helen guessed instantly, George chose Giacometti. Not quiet sure what this says about George... but we're looking at 'L'homme qui marche'. Perhaps Giacometti had foresight on lockdown activities.

For an image of the sculpture, here's the link :

    Amélie

    Amélie

Our final Matisse is an unfinished painting of his wife, Amélie. Expect muses, and our musings about them in portraiture. Marie loves Matisse. Matisse loved Amélie. He also loved painting. For the intriguing hierarchy of these feelings, lend us your ears. We're still in Nice, sunning ourselves, and if you feel like joining, lend yourself your headphones too.

    Here's a link to Amelie: https://www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/325736985540956301/

A small landmark, but this is the halfway mark of Series 1.

    The Problem of Description

    The Problem of Description

Henry took on a problem that this podcast, and anyone who looks at art, faces:

'How do you take on something visual with a verbal description?'

Still on Matisse, in this episode we talk about a drawing he made called 'La Passe de Hapataki'. It's found in Nice at the Matisse Museum. Earlier this year, at a school event where he was promoting art history trips to Italy, Henry encountered a sceptic. The conversation went a bit like this:

Sceptic: I do science and maths; I don't like art.
Henry: Ever fancied getting away from it all?

If you, like the sceptic duly did, feel like getting away from it all, come on down to Nice and from there head to Hapataki. The drawing is a little bit hard to find, so head to our instagram to see it : https://www.instagram.com/withsightinmind/ .

If instagram isn't your thing, send us an email on withsightinmind@gmail.com and we'll send it your way!

    Much love,

    WSIM.

    A painting of two goldfish

    A painting of two goldfish

We jump from the Renaissance to the 20th century and Henri Matisse for our next three podcasts. In this episode, we look at 'Le Bocal aux poissons rouges' from the Pompidou in Paris. A painting of two goldfish, an open window, and a streetview. Give or take, this is probably true (the three of us don't have any goldfish) of many views at the moment, so it was nice to escape to Henri's.

    find said fish below.
