    Is It Time to Regulate Social Media? Understanding the Mastodon migration

    Twitter Versus Mastodon: Who will fix our broken social media spaces? From Elon Musk to Mark Zuckerberg, from Apple to Amazon Web Services, from Parlor to Mastodon, who will protect democracy from the rule of the few? Who will protect free speech and or against hate speech and misinformation? In this interview with professor Yom Ophir of the University of Buffalo we discuss all of these issues and more.  Yotam Ophir (PhD, University of Pennsylvania, 2018) is an Assistant Professor of Communication at the University at Buffalo. His work combines computational methods for text mining, network analysis, experiments and surveys to study media content and effects in the areas of political, science, and health communication.  Dr. Ophir authored and co-authored more than 30 peer-review academic papers, published in journals such as American Journal of Public Health, Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Public Understanding of Science, Journal of Public Health, Health Communication, Communication Methods and Measures, and more.   His upcoming coauthored book (Oxford University Press) on the 2020 Presidential Elections, “Democracy amid Crises: Polarization, Pandemic, Protests, & Persuasion”, will be available in January 2023.     Who Was Yusuf al-Qaradawi? The story of the Muslim Brotherhood, Qatar, and Soft Power politics. In this episode, we explore the biography of Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the spiritual leader of the global Muslim Brotherhood movement. From an obscure Egyptian cleric, to an Al Jazeera media star.   Alberto M. Fernandez is vice-president of the Middle East Media Research Institute and a member of the board of directors of George Washington University's Center for Cyber and Homeland Security. He served as the U.S. State Department’s coordinator for the Center for Strategic Counterterrorism Communications from 2012 to 2015, retiring from the State Department in May 2015. Fernandez has served as U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea; charge d’affaires to the Republic of Sudan; director for Near East public diplomacy; director for Iraq public diplomacy; and in senior public diplomacy positions at the U.S. embassies in Afghanistan, Jordan, Syria, and Guatemala. His awards include the 2008 Presidential Meritorious Service Award, 2006 Edward R. Murrow Award for Excellence in Public Diplomacy, and a 2003 Superior Honor Award for his work in Afghanistan.
